      Department Overview: Real Estate and Agricultural Finance maintains a portfolio invested in commercial real estate and agricultural mortgages, as well as equity assets within specific real estate sectors. Agricultural Finance had $24.3 billion of total assets under management as of June 30, 2023. Agricultural Finance sources agricultural farm, ranch, agribusiness, timberland and forest products mortgage investments through five regional field offices in the U.S. and an international field office in Mexico City and a consulting office in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

      Program Description: MetLife Investment Management’s Summer Analyst Program is a 10-week hybrid internship program providing participants broad exposure to a global investment manager and specific insights into the agriculture finance sector. Summer analysts will develop various technical and analytical skills, have the opportunity to network with professionals across the company, and fully immerse themselves in MIM’s culture.

      Internship Program Dates: May 28, 2024 to August 2, 2024 (10 weeks)

      Agricultural Strategies Group (Overland Park, KS & Whippany, NJ): During the internship, the Agricultural Strategies Group (ASG) placement will provide an introduction to agricultural finance, focusing on strategic direction of a portfolio of agricultural mortgages. ASG guides the origination and management functions of a portfolio of agricultural mortgages for MIM’s clients. The summer analyst will gain hands-on exposure to agricultural mortgage underwriting, portfolio management, risk management, and asset and client management for our third-party investors. The internship will enhance personal credentials and offer the summer analyst the opportunity to establish relationships with industry professionals.

      Agricultural Finance had $24.3 billion of total assets under management in agricultural mortgage loans as of June 30, 2023.

      Specific responsibilities may include some of the following:

      • Support the Agricultural Finance’s management team in driving portfolio performance and platform growth;
      • Leverage Agriculture Finance’s strong working relationships across internal business units (regional offices, Institutional Client Group, Research and Finance departments) to support ASG responsibilities and deliver upon management expectations;
      • Coordination of monthly / quarterly / annual internal and external client reporting packages;
      • Assist in the preparation and communication of portfolio metrics/analysis to internal and external stakeholders;
      • Participate in portfolio surveillance and Investment Committee meetings, and
      • Active engagement across MIM 2024 Summer Analyst Program projects

      Research & Analytics (Whippany, NJ): During the summer internship, the Agricultural Research & Analytics placement will provide an introduction to institutional agricultural investment management, focusing on risk management, valuations, research & strategy, and portfolio performance analytics. The summer analyst will support our industry-leading agricultural debt platform, while enhancing personal credentials and developing relationships with industry professionals.

      Specific responsibilities may include some of the following:

      • Analytical support for the Research & Analytics teams;
      • Agricultural market research, analysis, and forecasting in support of investment decisions and portfolio strategy;
      • Develop and utilize existing portfolio analytics to assess exposure;
      • Evaluation of portfolio positioning, including opportunities and risks;
      • Support client and management portfolio reporting;
      • Support internal and external valuation and appraisal review oversight processes;
      • Construction of underwriting tools and benchmarks;
      • Assist in communicating house view of market trends, risks, and outlook via presentations and reports, and
      • Participate in broader MIM 2024 Summer Analyst Program projects

      Regional Offices (Fresno, CA; Germantown, TN; Overland Park, KS): During the summer internship, the Regional Office placement will provide an introduction to both operational aspects of agricultural mortgage investment sourcing and servicing, as well as portfolio management perspectives. The summer analyst may lead or support delivery of property and market analyses, assist on the documentation requirements associated with internal investment committee approval processes and closings, or facilitate an evaluation of specific servicing actions requiring elevated levels of approval. Additionally, the summer analyst will gain exposure to commercial underwriting, asset management, and risk management on a decentralized, regional level and work with portfolio managers to support our third-party investors. The internship will enhance personal credentials and offer the summer analyst the opportunity to establish relationships with industry professionals.

      Specific responsibilities may include some of the following:

      • Support associates’ efforts to source and originate new loans and manage an existing mortgage portfolio;
      • Conduct property underwriting, valuation and market analysis to evaluate new mortgage opportunities across a range of property types and geographies;
      • Collaborate with MIM associates, brokers, property owners, attorneys and other transaction counterparts in a professional manner to perform due diligence throughout the closing process;
      • Support the preparation of investment memoranda and participate in deal underwriting, presentations to the debt investment committee;
      • Assist with loan asset management functions, including financial statement analysis, loan monitoring, borrower requests, property inspections, management and investor reporting;
      • Perform internal and external ad hoc reporting, pipeline tracking using MetLife’s proprietary mortgage production system and provide systems database support;
      • Participate in ad-hoc assignments determined by the team’s needs and requirements at that time, and
      • Participate in broader MIM 2024 Summer Analyst Program projects

      Candidate Skills and Qualifications:

      MIM seeks to hire individuals who work well in team-based settings, are highly motivated, intelligent, have sound judgment, have solid analytical skills, and have demonstrated excellence in prior endeavors.

      Required Skills and Qualifications:

      • Candidate must be currently enrolled in a higher education institution and actively pursuing an undergraduate degree with a strong academic record and a demonstrated interest in agriculture
      • Candidate’s anticipated graduation date must be between December 2024 and June 2026
      • Candidate must have a strong work ethic, personal and professional integrity, and be able to adapt to new challenges in a dynamic environment while handling multiple projects
      • Candidate must be able to work independently and in a team environment, remaining detail-oriented and client-focused
      • Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and feel comfortable interacting with management-level professionals
      • Candidate must be familiar with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

      Preferred Skills and Qualifications

      • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office including Power BI and Teams is preferred
      • Some agricultural experience, including experience in core regional crops (e.g., row crops, dairy, livestock), is a plus.
