      Job title and brief description: The Application Engineer provides competent, timely technical assistance to SETCO’s Customers in the form of innovative and cost-effective precision spindle and slide design proposals. This person offers unparalleled technical expertise in the design and manufacturing of special machine tool components. Additionally, this person strives to earn the Customer’s confidence such that SETCO becomes their primary technical resource for precision spindles. This person is expected to travel to customer’s approximately 5 days per quarter.

      Qualifications:

      • 4-year Engineering Degree (BS, BSET, or equivalent).
      • 5-years minimum engineering experience or at least 2-year experience in precision spindle or bearing engineering.
      • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
      • Sufficient level of engineering knowledge and experience such that by applying standard techniques and basic methods, detailed work assignments and routine projects can be managed
      • Requires minimum supervision, except in areas of a unique aspect.
      • Multi-disciplinary background in mechanical engineering with some electrical knowledge preferred.
      • 3D solid modeling & simulation tool experience
      • Proficient in 2D and 3D CAD Software (AutoDesk AutoCAD & Inventor experience preferred).
      • Knowledge & expertise in metal cutting operations
      • Understands and applies standard project management methodologies.

      Primary tasks:

      • Assist in obtaining all necessary application data and information in order to adequately formulate proposals and generate requisite calculations. (customer facing)
      • Identify testing and inspection requirements and approve inspected/tested prototypes prior to shipment to the customer.
      • Identify and develop solutions for new and existing products through the integration of mechanical concepts and basic machine design.
      • Integrate technical, cost, value, and safety considerations into the product definition to comply with customer performance requirements.
      • Work with multi-discipline teams to develop new products or productivity initiatives (Engineering, R&D, Marketing, Sales, Finance and Operations).
      • Manage projects to ensure schedule, cost, and quality on aggressive timelines.
      • Identify & develop new concepts that provide unique solutions for a competitive performance advantage.
      • Work closely with Product Engineering to ensure designs are manufacturable and cost-effective.
      • Evaluate all available design information, calculations and test results to ensure proposed designs meet or exceed customer expectations.
      • Maintain familiarity with SETCO product design guides, standards, and specs.
      • Perform necessary calculations and provide design support to customers and Sr. Application Engineers when needed.
      • Obtain and maintain general working knowledge of SETCO manufacturing processes, standards and procedures.
      • Represent and promote SETCO and/or SETCO Engineering during visits to the customer, exhibitions or on visits to SETCO by the customer.
      • Strive for increased technical knowledge through avenues such as publications, discussions, instructional presentations, workshops, classes, and/or webinars.
      • Maintain project files in accordance with departmental standards.
      • Accurately complete and maintain up-to-date Design Review forms and assume responsibility that these forms are adequately reviewed and approved.
      • Maintain a level of originality such that unique ideas and concepts can be turned into functional, cost effective and marketable designs and components.
      • Develop a working knowledge of SETCO testing equipment and practices.
      • Originate/Investigate new designs, concepts or manufacturing processes that reduce cost and improve quality and/or performance.
      • Provide technical support to SETCO Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, Manufacturing, Assembly, Inspection, and Product Engineering departments as requested.
      • Effectively lead web meetings both internally and with customers.
      • Travel as needed to support sales efforts and provide technical support for customer presentations in order to win new orders.
      • Provide internal training to help develop SETCO’s mechatronic capabilities throughout the company.
