What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Direct and oversee the agency's sales, income, and local tax appeals processes
- Provide leadership and oversight of the agency's disclosure, safeguarding, and records management functions
- Lead and support the local tax advisory functions of the agency
- Ensure that office operations align with the agency's strategic plan
- Serve as the agency's liaison to the Office of the Attorney General
What is Required (Qualifications):
- Considerable knowledge of and experience applying federal, state, and local tax law
- Executive-level leadership and supervisory experience, along with knowledge of management principles and practices
- Experience advising senior leadership on legal matters
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly in explaining complex legal and technical tax issues
- Knowledge and experience with tax litigation and/or tax appeals
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience managing a tax controversy function within a state or federal agency
- Active Bar license in Virginia or another state strongly preferred
- Experience with tax disclosure, IRS safeguarding procedures, and record retention matters
- Experience advising on local property tax matters
