• Determines whether an alleged incapacitated person meets the criteria for guardianship or if there are less restrictive alternatives to avoid the need for guardianship.
• The Assistant Court Investigator II investigates the ability of the alleged incapacitated person ("proposed ward") to function in his or her environment; reviews the proposed ward's medical conditions and records; assesses functional and mental capacity; interviews the proposed ward, family and friends; determines support systems in place for the proposed ward; checks on the proposed wards assets and income; and makes a detailed written report with recommendations to the Court based on the investigation and findings.
• May attend guardianship court hearings to testify regarding the investigation, findings, and any recommendations.
• Assists with court visitor program including visits and supervising social work contractors.
• Speaks with community about guardianship, alternatives, and supports and services as requested

1. Assesses capacity of proposed wards.

3. Investigates and assesses proposed ward including interviewing all relevant parties.
4. Prepares and files reports for established ward guardianships including problem reports, complaints, successors, modifications to rights, closures, and restorations.
5. Screens court-initiated referrals.
6. Reviews proposed care plans for proposed wards.
7. Recruits, trains, and supervises social work contractors to handle overflow investigations.
8. Testifies in court as requested.
9. Interacts with state and local agencies to assist in securing services and resources for proposed wards.
10. Supervises and trains social work interns as needed.
11. Trains guardians on their duties upon appointment.
12. Prepares and gives presentations to the public (community groups and agencies) regarding guardianship, aging and dementia, and intellectual and developmental disabilities.
13. Performs other duties as required.

• TO APPLY, must possess a Master Social Work degree and training in assessment of incapacity of adults.
• TO APPLY, must have Five (5) full-time years of work experience in the assessment of adults.
• TO APPLY, must hold current Texas Master Social Work license.
• TO APPLY, must possess a valid driver license and current automobile liability insurance. Note: A Texas driver license is required to hold the position.
• Verbal skills and interviewing skills required
• Must be knowledgeable about services available to incapacitated adults including residential, medical and social services.
• Must be experienced in assessing cognitive functioning of adults; must have knowledge of mental illnesses, medical conditions, and medications that affect functioning.
• Ability to work independently.
• Proficient at prioritizing and assessing risk.
• Must be proficient in word processing software.

Tarrant County will conduct background checks on new hires that will include a criminal background check related to convictions and deferred adjudications in the past seven years and may include credit reports, motor vehicle records, employment records and educational attainment. While performing the duties of this position, the Assistant Court Investigator II is regularly required to bend, carry, climb stairs, drive, keyboard, sit, talk, use his/her hands, walk, work alone and with others, and work overtime. Field work includes conducting interviews in the environment most conducive for the proposed or current ward.
