      Duties/Responsibilities:

      1. Develop a balanced research and extension program in basic and applied aspects of tropical plant virology, including investigating and developing host-plant resistance to viruses on key crops in Hawaii, examining viral diseases that threaten plants endemic to Hawaii, and understanding the genetics and biology of the interaction among plants, viruses, and vectors to facilitate the development of integrated pest management strategies.
      2. Develop novel techniques for virus detection, virus genome characterization, and the manipulation of plant/virus genes for plant protection or use in biological control.
      3. Co-teach PEPS 606 (Biology of Plant Pathogens: Bacteria and Viruses), periodic teaching of PEPS 714 (Advanced Plant Virology), as well as other courses assigned by the chair to meet the instructional workload including but not limited to PEPS 371 (Genetics: Theory to Application).
      4. Develop or co-develop new undergraduate or graduate courses based on departmental needs and faculty expertise. The incumbent faculty will participate in the Tropical Plant Pathology Graduate Program by participating in the instructor rotation for PEPS 660 (Seminar in Plant Pathology) and serving on graduate student committees.
      5. Provide expertise to the Agricultural Diagnostic Service Center (ADSC) for plant virus diagnosis and control, as well as develop and disseminate relevant extension information through extension publications and presentations.
      6. Carry out research and extension continuously throughout the year and actively cooperate with Researchers and Extension Agents within the department and college and is expected to provide service to the college, university, profession, and community.
      7. Secure extramural funds that complement the extension and research programs.
      8. The incumbent faculty will mentor graduate and undergraduate students and ensure the academic and professional success of students.
      9. Publish refereed articles in leading journals and make scientific presentations at national and international conferences.
      Minimum Qualifications :
      1. Doctorate from a college or university of recognized standing in Plant Pathology or related field with experience in Plant Virology. ABD candidates may be considered, but all degree requirements must be completed at the time of hire. In discipline-specific circumstances, the requirement of the doctorate may be waived by the University upon demonstration of appropriate professional training, competence or experience.
      2. Ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate level.
      3. Demonstrated experience with academic and research in molecular virology at the graduate or postdoctoral level.
      4. Demonstrated research productivity as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
      5. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
      Desirable Qualifications :
      1. Strong track record of scholarly publications and securing competitive extramural funding.
      2. Possess two (2) years of postdoctoral research experience.
      3. Demonstrated experience in applying classical and modern virology techniques for solving plant virus disease problems.
      4. Demonstrated knowledge of virus-vector ecology, statistical skills, and management of tropical virus diseases.
      5. Demonstrated experience with developing and/or utilizing university-level written or web-based course materials or college student teaching evaluations.
      6. Demonstrated experiences of acquiring and/or being part of extramural funding in support of plant viral research.
