      THE ROLE

The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) seeks a visionary leader to help build a URJ network of vibrant Jewish communities that reflects the diversity of our ecosystem and models our values. Our deepest aspiration is to create a world in which Judaism enables all people to experience peace and wholeness (shalom), justice and equity (tzedek), and belonging and joy (shayachut and simcha). Jewish Your Way is a new venture within the URJ focused on making it possible for individuals to engage with Judaism in ways that are meaningful to them. The leader of Jewish Your Way will collaboratively create and implement a vision to reach individuals from diverse backgrounds and engage them in camps, congregations, and communities in the URJ network.

      WHAT YOU WILL DO

      • Lead an org-wide effort to reach and engage individuals seeking community and opportunities to connect with Judaism "on their terms." Use creative entry experiences, resources, and tools for new individuals from diverse backgrounds to engage in the URJ network. Prioritize individual needs and interests, meeting people where they are rather than assuming what they want.
      • Challenge the norms. Take risks, quickly course correct, and strengthen forward to connect with those not yet engaged and bring them into the URJ network. Think broadly about creative approaches for connecting in-person and using tools for virtual community building.
      • Put in place practices to quickly scale what is working to reach more people including expansion of existing offerings that are resonating including Intro to Judaism Online, Grow a Good Citizen, Our Story, Your Table, etc.

      • Survey the landscape of existing offerings within the URJ, the Jewish community and beyond to understand what opportunities exist for expansion, collaboration, and creativity. Use internal and external data to methodically grow participation. Priorities for expansion include low-barrier, first-time experiences to bring new individuals into the network, affinity spaces/groups, "programs in a box" to support congregations in pipeline building, etc.
      • Establish internal and external relationships and partnerships for greatest impact. Partner with program leaders at the URJ and in other organizations to create/curate content that reaches individuals from diverse backgrounds. Create pathways across the URJ system for new and existing individuals to deepen their engagement with the URJ.
      • Create a sustainable business model for short- and long-term success. Work closely with URJ development team to cultivate donors and organizations partners that are interested in supporting Jewish Your Way.
      • Manage an integrated team including 3-4 direct reports and others with dotted line accountability.

WHO YOU ARE & KEYS TO SUCCESS (THE MUST-HAVES):

      • You understand and value the lived experience of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, including People of Color, persons with disabilities, individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+, individuals and families from interfaith backgrounds, and other underrepresented identities.
      • You are a courageous leader, willing to take risks that challenge the status quo.
      • You thrive in creative spaces that have yet to be defined, listening for themes, opportunities, and partnerships that will create unimagined opportunities for engagement.
      • You can translate your vision into a concrete plan of action and understand the importance of scaling offerings for financial sustainability in relation to programmatic development. You can develop and implement a financially sustainable business plan to support your vision in the context of the strategic direction of the URJ.
      • You recognize ways that race, and other identities intersect in this work, especially with communities we serve. You are comfortable talking about identities such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability status, and/or gender identity in plain, specific terms. You understand the historical context for racial inequity and its present-day implications. You can build authentic relationships across lines of difference, such as race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, disability, gender identity, citizenship status, or other identities.
