      Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
      Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of full-time advising, counseling, and/or administrative experience. Experience supporting students navigating challenging circumstances and/or in emergency/crisis situations. Experience supervising or managing professional staff. Experience working with a diverse student population.

      Preferred Qualifications:
      Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in higher education administration, counseling, social work, or related field. Additional years (4+) of full-time advising, counseling, and/or administrative experience. Experience in a higher education setting. Experience working with faculty, academic affairs, and student affairs staff. Experience with student staff training and development. Program development experience.

      Brief Description of Duties:
      The Associate Director of Student Support reports to the Director of Student Support and Family Services and is responsible for engaging, supporting, and empowering undergraduate and graduate students in order to help maximize their Stony Brook experience and prepare them for success academically and beyond. The selected candidate must demonstrate a very high level of care, discretion, and support for the safety and well-being of each student in our community. The incumbent will have a solid commitment to inclusion, cultural humility, and the ability to work in a multicultural environment. The Associate Director is a member of the Health, Wellness, and Prevention Services team and works to build collaborative relationships with other colleagues across Student Affairs.
      In the Director's absence, the Associate Director serves as the department lead. The Associate Director works collaboratively with the Director to provide oversight for empowering our students, providing tools, programs and services to aid in their success. The Associate Director demonstrates a willingness and flexibility to explore and implement new delivery models and assists the Director in providing leadership for the department’s programming and evaluative efforts, including various pieces of training and consultation with campus stakeholders.
      The Associate Director will assist with data collection, tracking, and maintenance of student support initiatives, outreach, and interventions. The Associate Director strives to ensure that students, faculty, and staff are well informed about programs, events, and services from the Student Support and Family Services Team that advance student success.

      Student Support and Crisis Management

      • The Associate Director will advise students who face personal challenges, including but not limited to health concerns, financial crises, and family issues and initiate referrals to appropriate departments. The incumbent will assist the Director and Associate Vice President with the response to personal crises and aftercare services to individuals and others affected by crisis. In the absence of the Director, the Associate Director serves as the division’s liaison to parents and family members in the event of a student’s serious illness, injury, or tragedy. The Associate Director will create opportunities, initiatives, and interventions that support retention and graduation rates and work closely with Counseling and Psychological Services, University Police and other key campus partners, to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.

      Building Partnerships

      • The Associate Director builds interdisciplinary campus partnerships that advance Student Support Team initiatives and delivers educational programs to faculty and staff to enhance the visibility and awareness of the Student Support Team mission and core values. The Associate Director is an active member of Family Services and Support and develops family orientation programs and communications, collaborating with campus constituents to build stronger relationships with our diverse group of parents and family members. The Associate Director participates in and presents at admissions events as well as new student and family orientation events, communicating to audiences about the services provided by Student Affairs.

      Staff Supervision and Development

      • The Associate Director will supervise professional staff with guidance, support, and advice on their professional and functional responsibilities and assist in recruitment, training and supervision of undergraduate and graduate student staff members across the department. The Associate Director will create and maintain a welcoming professional work environment and atmosphere that is student centered, focusing on positive customer service and student development.

      Professional Development

      • The Associate Director will actively participate in professional development opportunities that enhance best practices and skills for Student Support responsibilities. The Associate Director will support Divisional and University-wide initiatives and functions by supporting events, activities and programs sponsored by areas outside of your department.

      Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

      Evening and weekend work will be required at times.

      Special Notes:
      This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

      In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,026 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
