      Summary: The AV Technician is responsible for maintaining and operating the iconic exhibits of the Museum which include state-of-the-art digitally controlled video projection systems, effects, lighting and sound. Responsibilities also include maintaining and operating visitor gallery lighting and audio video elements inside the Museum to ensure a world class visitor experience. Responsible for technology and AV for special events set-up and tear down.

      RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

      Sets up and tears down A/V for special events which includes:

      • Proficient in mixing on various audio consoles.
      • Setting up speakers, audio consoles, microphones, lighting fixtures, and projector.
      • Adjusting audio/video/lighting setting for each event.
      • Operating all equipment during the event.
      • Tearing down all equipment after the event has concluded.

      Performs start-of-day maintenance on exhibits as necessary to produce the highest quality of continuous show performances.

      • Troubleshoots and remedies show technology problems that arise in startup and during performances.
      • Continuously monitors the shows for audio, video, and effects quality and make accommodations as needed.
      • Reports any issues to the Manager of AV Services.
      • Works with Events and Sales concerning client’s needs for any event.
      • Performs safety checks of all systems and ensures that any mechanical effects are in safe working condition.

      Follows and improves procedures for and manages theaters preventive maintenance and materials replenishment schedules and procedures.

      • Files all maintenance reports in a timely manner.
      • Performs start-of-day maintenance on technology in addition to theaters including exhibit gallery lighting and sound and audio/visual elements. Ensures operating at highest quality levels. Troubleshoots and remedies problems in startup and during the day.

      Performs repairs and adjustments to technology components in theaters, gallery, exhibits and performance spaces.

      • Some hands-on repairs and adjustments will be required.
      • Works with vendors and manages their work where the vendors have prime responsibility for some of the elements.
      • Ensures that all theater and exhibit equipment, rooms and materials are well organized and clean/neat and elements visible to the public are always “show ready”. This includes theater auditoriums.

      Quality Control: Responsible for ensuring that all equipment and materials are handled, stored, and maintained in the best possible manner and in accordance with manufacturer/integrators guidelines to ensure best show quality and maximum length of life.

      • Provides input to Manager of AV Services to ensure show continuity, smooth show entry/exit and maximum showmanship.
      • Assists presenters in operating touch screen control panels, mics, and automated door systems.
      • be ready and able to host shows for guests, which includes some public speaking.
      • Performs other activities as necessary.


      Contributes to the effective team-based solutions of all problems, issues, and opportunities.

      Acts as team player and provides expertise within the team and with other teams as appropriate.

      Duties include but are not limited to the above.

      JOB REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

      Education Level:

      • Ability to read and demonstrate basic oral, written, mathematical, and manual skills. Ability to communicate in standard English. High school graduate and equivalent professional experience.

      Experience in Field:

      • Minimum 2-years theatrical/stage experience in stage management, automated theatrical lighting, and basic theatrical lighting fixture maintenance required. Additional 2 years’ experience in automated show control systems, audio systems, video servers and projection systems preferred but not required.

      Work Schedule:

      • Ability to work at least 30 hours per week; any shift as assigned, including evenings, weekends and holidays. Ability to work rotating shifts and on short notice. Ability to be reachable to respond to clients’ needs and requests. Ability to work additional hours as business needs demand.

      Unique Expertise/Certification/Registrations:

      • Knowledge of theater sound and special effects a plus. Systems and effects include show control, multiscreen digital projection, video servers, automatic lighting control, dimmers, strobes, air movement, fans, foggers, hazers, lasers, 3D mapping projection, ETC lighting controls, touch panels, theater lights, digital audio controllers/players, wireless microphones, HD projection, and live sound mixing
      • PC skills required. Knowledge of Ethernet switching networks a plus. Alcorn-McBride programming a plus.
      • Strong track record of dependability, professionalism, and managing complex and simultaneous processes, particularly in a visitor venue/customer service environment is essential. Troubleshooting, prioritizing, and working well under tight time constraints and in demanding show delivery situations is also essential.
      • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with staff at a variety of levels from technicians through executives. Demonstrated ability to handle shows for a variety of audiences including general admission, school groups, and VIPs. Sound judgment is needed for complex technological situations.
      • Ability to successfully pass a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum reference check, background investigation, and drug screening.
      • Computer literate in standard office management software, including Microsoft Office applications.

      • Environmental Parameters: Ability to work in a window-less office.
      • Physical Demands:
        1. Strength: Ability to lift/move items weighing up to 50 lbs. (approximately)
        2. Type: Express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word and to perceive nature of sounds. Ability to hear accurately to interact with the public and co-workers. Demonstrate clarity of vision; judge distance and space relationships; identify and distinguish colors. Ability to perform tasks concurrently. Work involves sitting most of the time but involves walking or standing for significant periods of time.

      Equipment Used:

      • Personal computer, cell phone, telephone, two-way radio, calculator, and other office equipment. Also, projection systems, sound boards/mixers, lighting control systems, amplifiers, network switches, microphones, web cameras, and digital cameras.

      • Manual:
        1. Motor Coordination: Ability to make necessary movements in selecting, picking and depositing items.
        2. Finger Dexterity: Ability to pick, pinch or otherwise work with fingers to operate above equipment. Ability to pick up a variety of items and place them on shelves; to move knobs, buttons or switches.
      • Manual Dexterity: Ability to seize, hold, grasp, turn or otherwise work with hands. Ability to shake, sort, fold or stack items; to place and retrieve items.
