- Registered (or eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment. (Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the CAB. Applicants must confirm their eligibility with the CAB. Confirmation of registration / eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be made.)
- A Master’s degree in planning-related field (e.g., natural resource planning or conservation planning) and 24 months related experience*; OR
- Undergraduate Degree in a planning-related field (e.g., natural resource planning or conservation planning) plus a minimum of 36 months’ related experience*; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and 5 years of related experience* may be considered.
- Experience in natural resource planning or systematic conservation planning.
- Experience building collaborative relationships with First Nations.
- Experience in managing project teams and/or leading a major project or a component of a major project or regional initiative, including identifying deliverables, developing project requirements, contract negotiation, performance management.
- Experience with engagement and liaison practices, including building and maintaining relationships with internal and/or external interested parties, including around contentious issues and conflict situations.
- Eligible for (within 6 months of employment) or possessing a Registered Professional Planner designation and/ or Project Management Professional Certificate.
- Experience leading engagement and consultation, including strategic planning for capacity considerations.
- Experience in conflict and dispute resolution principles and practices.
- Experience providing advice and recommendations to senior level management, and/or internal and/or external interested parties.
- Experience applying project management methodology and principles to projects.
- Must possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent.
- Must be willing to fly in planes and helicopters.
- Must be willing to travel throughout the province as needed.

The Provincial Caribou Recovery Program (CRP) is a coordinated program in the Ministry of Land, Water and Resource Stewardship (WLRS). Within WLRS, the Wildlife, Habitat and Species Recovery Branch holds overall responsibility for the CRP and provides provincial coordination, strategic direction, funding, and oversight for caribou recovery in BC throughout the province. The CRP is directly accountable to achieve provincial goals and objectives for caribou. Program staff function in a 'matrix' staffing management system, this means they may report functionally to other divisions/regions/branches in various work groups while remaining accountable to the CRP.
The Senior Conservation Planning Biologist leads the development of creative strategic solutions to complex conservation biology issues. The position bridges environmental, social, and economic disciplines of natural resource management to advance caribou recovery in partnership with First Nations. The position will lead a diverse project team of multidisciplinary specialists across multiple agencies and is responsible for the management, coordination, and delivery of strategic initiatives from initiation through to conclusion. The position deals with complex natural resource issues requiring skills in developing relationships with First Nations and interested parties. Developing lasting partnerships with First Nations and interested parties is key to ensuring a shared responsibility for caribou recovery across the province. The position will be responsible for applied conservation biology and leads collaborative planning tables and public engagement. The position is a member of the provincial Caribou Recovery Program Planning Initiatives Team and will be responsible for projects that support the goals of the program.

About this Position:
AMENDMENT (October 3, 2023) - EXTENDED until October 15, 2023
Currently there is 1 temporary assignment until March 31, 2024 with the opportunity to become permanent in Smithers, Terrace, or Burns Lake.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week as per the Telework Agreement.
An eligibility list may be established for future temporary assignment and permanent opportunities.
