This is an exciting opportunity to join our expanding cardiology department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust. This post is a full time appointment for an initial12 months fixed term that will be extendable in the longer term for a cardiology clinical fellow.

The post is ideally suited to a cardiology/general medical trainee who wishes to consolidate their knowledge and increase their experience in cardiology.

The successful candidate would be working at ST3+/registrar level within the Cardiology Department. The post would offer regular cardiology inpatient ward cover with other specialist interests such as outpatient clinics, cardiac catheter laboratory sessions and cardiac imaging experience.

      Main duties of the job

      Clinical Duties and Responsibilities:

      1. Working autonomously alongside a consultant on daily ward rounds on cardiology inpatients.

      2. Gain experience in weekly sessions in cardiac catheter laboratory on coronary/device work and cardiac cross-sectional/echo imaging.

      3. Participation in cardiology outpatient clinics.

      4. Attendance and participation in weekly cardiothoracic/echo/heart failure multi-disciplinary meetings.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with some experience in cardiology to increase their exposure and ability to work independently at a middle-grade level.

There are numerous sub-speciality opportunities within the department which can be tailored to the post-holders job plan depending on their interest and capabilities. Tis also includes the ability to participate in audit and research.

The fellow will have a named supervisor and their training will be monitored. The post is not formally recognised by the RCP for training purposes, but allows the successful applicant the ability to consolidate and expand on their cardiology experience.

The post is initially for a 12 month period which may be extended after mutual consent. There are no on-call commitments with this post.

      About us

      Cardiac Catheterisation/Coronary Intervention

A local PCI service started in 2004, supported by the Peninsula Cardiac Network, and currently undertakes approximately 540 PCIs per year. Flow wire / IVUS / rota-ablation technology is integrated into the lab' system and readily available. Currently, approximately 900 diagnostic coronary angiograms are performed per year. A 24 hour, seven day/week primary PCI service has been running since 2011 and deals with approximately 190 PPCI/year.

      Permanent Pacing/Devices

The pacemaker service commenced in October 1989. Currently ~200 brady implants are performed each year and approximately 40-50 complex devices including CRT/ICD/S-ICDs.

Home monitoring is available for the complex devices and there is a move to transfer all brady devices to this over the coming years.

      Non-Invasive Investigations

The Cardiac Department has a comprehensive range of non-invasive diagnostic equipment.

Echocardiography is provided by 4 machines (GE Vivid e9, Vivid Q and Vivid-i) and we are in the process of purchasing a 5th. There is a handheld available for urgent targeted scans. Images are incorporated onto a digital cardiology archive.

Transoesophageal echo and stress echocardiography are also available weekly and run by Dr Blakemore.

  • About the company

National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly-funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery—a health service based on clinical need, not ability to pay. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom apart from dental treatment and optical care.
