      Avera Health Plans is currently seeking a highly motivated Chief Operating Officer with experience in progressive operations management.

      Job Summary

      The Chief Operating Officer (COO) assures effective planning, integration, and functioning of Avera Health Insurance Division’s core business processes. As a member of the Senior Leadership team for the Avera Health Insurance Division, this position provides leadership and vision, and contributes significantly to corporate-wide strategic and business planning, priority-setting and decision-making. This position will have the oversight of major functional areas: Operations, Claims, Plan Structure and Integrity, Customer Experience, and Information Technology. The COO sets goals for the department and leadership team members who report to the COO.

      • Provides leadership, direction, and support for the major core operational functions: Operations, Claims, Plan Structure and Integrity, Customer Experience.
      • Design, plan, and implement business strategies, plans and procedures with an overall responsibility for the implementation of operational aspects to achieve organizational success.
      • Assures business processes have sufficient human, financial, and technological resources to achieve goals and objectives.
      • As the officer responsible for the majority of the functional operating units of Avera Health Plans, the COO is accountable with the CAO for delivering on the operational metrics for all Avera Health Plans products and services.
      • Works closely with the CFO to ensure fiscally responsible operations.
      • Responsible for the measurement and effectiveness of all operational processes, internal and external.
      • Achieves operating results that meet or exceed best practices and the expectations of the Avera Health Plans customers, and that are compliant with all applicable laws, rules, contracts, and regulations.
      • Serves as a member of the Strategy Council, sharing responsibility for and contributing to policy formation, strategic direction, high-level priority setting and decision-making, achievement of corporate goals, and overall leadership of the organization. In this capacity, provides information, support, and advice to the governing Board of Directors, as requested by the Chief Executive Officer.
      • Represents Avera Health Plans on appropriate local, state, and national trade groups, governmental and industry work groups and committees, and similar external venues.

      Education and/or Experience

      • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related field or ability to obtain within 30 months.
      • An executive with 10 or more years of progressive operations management experience in the health insurance, financial services or technology services industries.
      • Demonstrated track record of proactive management leading to improved performance at reduced costs, particularly through the implementation of a well-defined improvement methodology (e.g. lean manufacturing, 6 Sigma, etc.).
