      The Chief Operations Officer provides strategic direction and leadership across the Los Angeles Terminal focusing on operational processes and issues impacting multiple facilities. This role provides strategic guidance and assistance to the terminal management teams ensuring efficient operations and maximum customer value. The position is also responsible for tactical support functions provided centrally for the terminals.

      What your impact will be:

      PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

      • Lead, enable, and empower the Pier 400 Operations & Optimization teams, ensuring proper tools and resources are available to meet terminal requirements.

      • Provide insight and direction to the terminal management team with regards to labor relations strategy, operational excellence, and talent development.

      • Oversee analysis of container operations to develop enhancements and simplify processes to ensure safety, improve customer service, and reduce costs.

      • Foster a culture of inclusion, open communication, zero harm, and continuous improvement.

      • Define, develop & execute local strategies for the operational departments, in line with & contributing to the company vision & strategy, within the guidelines of the business plan & budget.

      • Manage the day to day operations of the reporting functions according to the agreed operating principles of the business & relationships with customers.

      • Achieve the Company’s and its customer’s expectations with regard to operational efficiency, productivity and reliability.

      • Responsible for setting and achieving the budget for the reporting functions.

      • Ensure that the terminal adheres to AMPT global standards and best practices for container terminal operations, translating to local approach when required.

      • Ensure teamwork across APMT global network to leverage experiences, solicit input and ensure full and effective implementation of best practices.

      • Interpret, implement, and comply with relevant Company, Federal, State, and other Local business requirements.

      • Provide/drive inputs to the IT/OT function, supports and contributes to development in technology & systems as applicable to improve efficiencies in cost, productivity & customer service.

      • Leading role in selection, negotiation and finalization of agreements with suppliers & customers. Where appropriate is responsible for execution and maintenance of SLA’s.

      • Fosters collaboration with(global) AM, OT and IT to ensure proper ownership of automation systems is guaranteed

      • Drive forward Data driven decision making capabilities in P400.

      What we are looking for:

      • Education – Bachelor Degree required and 12-15 years of experience in maritime transportation/logistics, with at least 8-10 years in terminal operations or management. Masters Degree is preferable

      • Leadership – Conveys goals and expectations clearly; takes specific action to foster teamwork and keep people motivated. Is receptive to innovative ideas and suggestions. Thinks strategically and has long term vision.

      • Accountability – Set long term operational plans that impact by maintaining standards that lead to high performance and execution

      • Agility – Ability to create and improve important changes rapidly

      • Collaboration – Ability to work together across boundaries by using influence and negotiation skills

      • Functional Excellence – Broad knowledge and experience across several job areas

      DIMENSIONS:

      General office setting, typically the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work, usually at a computer terminal – with short breaks or lunch period. However, there may be some bending/stooping, reaching above shoulder level, walking; standing; carrying of light items such as papers, books or packages of up to 25 pounds. Should be able to hear & speak clearly using phone / headset to communicate with customers; be able to navigate, view & enter information on the computer. Will need to travel frequently, at short notice, across the US & Canada as well as international.

      NATURE AND SCOPE:

      • Reports directly to Managing Director - LSA

      • Direct Reports: Director of Execution, Director of Vessel Operations; Director of Rail Operations; Director of Yard, & Gate; Director of Terminal Strategy, Data Analyst and Optimization Director

      GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

      • Technical knowledge of the current and new systems to push terminal in a progressive manner

      • Knowledge of related laws and regulations / requirements

      • Handling of multiple mission-critical projects simultaneously and ability to meet deadlines.

      • Conflict resolution and problem solving skills, strong cultural awareness.

      • Drives for results and success, conveys a sense of urgency and drives issues to closure, persists despite obstacles and opposition

      • Performs other position related duties as specified by management

      • Minimum 10 to 12 years in operations management roles in container terminals with at least 5 years’ team leadership experience.

      • Previous experience in managing a start up facility

      • Proven experience in cost and productivity optimization (through process optimization) as well as design and implementation of new operation standards.

      • Strong understanding of the role of IT in a container terminal environment

      • Experience in finance related matters, setting budgets and reporting against financial objectives.

      • Extensive knowledge of APM Terminals operational practices.

      • Proven strong people leadership capabilities that enable to obtain cooperation, promote a collaboration culture, high performance mindset and enabling people development.

      • Indepth understanding of BI(CC) in an automated facility

      • Good communication skills incl. ability to communicate across the organization.

      • Excellent analytical skills and creative problem solving.

      • Effective negotiation and conflict resolution skills.

      • Fluent in English and local language.

      • Ability to assess business issues, identify risks and correlations, interpret same into operations and design solutions.

      Job Type: Full Time

      Salary: 200,000.00 to 300,000.00

      Benefits: Full time employees are eligible for Health Insurance, Paid Time Off, and 401k Match

      The above stated pay range is the anticipated starting salary range for this position. The Company may adjust this range in light of prevailing market conditions and other factors such as location. The Company will work directly with the selected candidate(s) on the final starting salary in accordance with all applicable laws
