      Coastal Gallo Vineyards Operations & Viticulture Internship Program

      Duration: June-December 2024

      Available Locations: Healdsburg, Napa, Santa Maria and Monterey County

      Gallo Family Vineyards owns and operates various vineyards in Sonoma, Napa, Solano, Lake County, Monterey, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. We also maintain long term growing contracts with growers from Sonoma, Mendocino, Napa, Solano, San Francisco Bay, Lodi, Monterey and Washington State. Fruit from these diverse growing regions supports a number of wine programs including: William Hill, Louis Martini, MacMurray Ranch, Bridlewood Estate, Frei Brothers, Edna Valley, Ghost Pines, Mirassou, Rancho Zabaco and Columbia.

      What You Will Do

      We are currently searching for appropriate candidates to fill 6-month positions within our Winegrowing Operations. Coastal Winegrowing/Gallo Vineyards Inc. strives to produce the highest quality wine grapes using technologically advanced production techniques. Interns will support the many different areas of our Winegrowing Operations including general viticulture, irrigation management, pest control, tractor and spray operations, new equipment development and cultural operations. Some of the intern’s essential functions could include the following:

      • Supports all GVI operations and viticulture winegrowing practices.
      • Assists with crop estimations, phenology data collection and irrigation practices.
      • Assists with harvest activities including maturity sampling, harvest equipment preparation and quality control of mechanically and hand-harvested fruit.
      • Participates in pest and disease scouting and helps draft treatment thresholds for specific pests.
      • Supports GVI in logistical allocation of assets .
      • Uses GPS technology and the Geographical Information System to implement precision farming and map vineyard infrastructure.
      • Assists with the design, layout, and planting of a new vineyard block.

      Compensation

      • Hiring Salary Range Posted: $23.50 - $23.50/ hour
      • Actual compensation paid within the range will be determined by factors such as the education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data

      • Currently enrolled at a college or university and working towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the following majors OR have obtained a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the following majors: Agriculture, Business, Economics, Entomology, Animal Sciences, Biological Sciences, Plant Biology, Ag Systems Management, Viticulture, Horticulture, Plant Science, Agricultural Science, Enology, Soil Science, Food Science, Hydrology, Engineering, Geographical Information Systems, Land Resources Mgt., Forestry, Resource Mgt., Ag Business, Winemaking, Biology, Ag Policy, Chemistry, Spanish, or Environmental.
      • Required to lift and move up to 40 lbs.
      • Candidates for this position must have a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. Required to obtain a California driver’s license or appropriate state driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
      • Required to drive between various production sites and locations.
      • Required availability to work evenings, weekends and holidays when necessary.
      • Required to be 18 years or older. This may be in addition to other age requirements, if applicable, as listed in this job description.

      What Will Set You Apart

      • Junior or Senior class standing at a college or university and working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Viticulture, Horticulture, Plant Science, Agricultural Science, Enology, Soil Science, Food Science, Hydrology, Geographical Information Systems or Environmental OR working towards your Master’s degree (in the above areas of study).
      • Grape pest and disease identification and general viticulture knowledge.
      • Computer skills: Microsoft Office, Excel, Statistical Analysis (MiniTab, SAS), GPS Mapping and ArcView.
      • Basic operation experience including Ag based equipment, trailers, trucks, etc.
      • Experience with some agricultural commodity and/or production operation.

      • Required to lift and move up to 40 lbs.
      • Inside/Outside conditions: work estimated at 90-100% (but not limited to) outside with weather of varying types.
      • Wet/Slippery conditions vary and may include work in rain.
      • Required to work outside in hot weather. Noise levels may vary. Occasional situations where ear protection is required.
