      Commodities Reporter (Level 1 Journalist) (New York, NY) - Reuters

      Produce global news/analysis pieces on soft commodity topics, coordinating with Reuters reporters placed in the main producing regions such as India, Thailand, China, Vietnam, Central America and Brazil.

      About the Role

      As our Commodities Reporter (Level 1 Journalist) , you will:

      • Produce news and analyses on production, marketing, transportation and processing of soft agricultural commodities, particularly coffee, sugar, and cocoa, by talking to farmers in producing countries in South and Central America, by communicating with co-op executives on those countries and with farmers and commodities traders located at the origin of products as well as at destination countries such as the United States and Canada.

      • Gather market information in the United States related to the physical trade of commodities, including raw and refined sugar as well as green coffee beans that have already been imported from producing countries and are stored at warehouses at U.S. ports to be sold to local roasters.

      • Build a solid set of sources among investors, brokers, buyers and strategists in New York and across the United States, Canada and Latin America who are behind the price movements in the benchmark soft commodities futures traded in the Intercontinental Exchange in New York. Break news on changes on regulation, on large positioning by traders to deliver or receive large amounts of agricultural goods, on eventual non-compliance by players of contracts previously agreed to (ie defaults).

      • Produce regular polls/surveys with information from brokers and analysts around the world with the goal of projecting future movements in the commodities markets covered by this position.

      • Collaborate with reporters and editors in London on the daily coverage of commodities markets on a global scale (which requires looking at investors strategies, positions of commercial players and movements by producers);

      • Collaborate with reporters in Brazil and Latin America, as well as the wider global agriculture team at Reuters on broader stories, including pieces related to climate change and the impact on agriculture, but also regarding global trade, energy transformation, and changes in transportation such as new routes or ports.

      • At least 10% travel time required to cover conferences and to gather information for stories.

      About You

      To be our Commodities Reporter (Level 1 Journalist) , you will likely have:

      • Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Journalism, Economics or a closely related field, plus 5 years of experience as a Correspondent, Journalist or related occupation covering news on commodities for major news wires or newspapers.
