      About the Role

      The Communications Manager – Pacific position works closely with Matson’s Pacific Division community affairs leaders to raise awareness of Matson’s business and community activities and build goodwill among key audiences in Hawaii, Guam, and the South Pacific. The position is responsible for the development and implementation of internal and external communication strategies in consultation with the VP, Corporate Communications.

      What you’ll do:

      • Keeps VP, Corporate Communications updated regularly on local issues, developments, and activities relevant to achieving Department objectives.
      • Understands the Matson brand and ensures consistency of communication and activities designed to promote and reinforce the brand internally and externally.
      • Maintains a thorough understanding of Matson’s service offerings in Hawaii and the Pacific, as well as generally across the entire network.
      • Serves as lead local strategy advisor on public relations, news media relations, brand communications, and internal communications activities to support the achievement of Department objectives.
      • Leads development and management of annual regional advertising and communication plans and budgets.
      • Coordinates activities with Community Relations, Sales, and Operations leaders.
      • Manage day-to-day support activities of Matson’s local advertising/communications firm, MVNP, in furtherance of Department objectives.
      • Generates content for relevant Matson internal and external communications, including but not limited to news releases, social media posts, internal announcements, website copy, Customer Advisories, talking points, PowerPoint presentations, and executive statements.
      • Serves as senior editor for Matson news, the company’s bimonthly employee newsletter.
      • Develops positive community relationships while serving as the spokesperson or key contact for Matson with community groups or news media representatives as needed.
      • Participates in the development and/or execution of local special events with other departments as needed.
      • Supports internal and external project teams as needed toward successful outcomes for company objectives.
      • Undertakes special projects as directed by VP, Corporate Communications.

      • Working Knowledge: Native Hawaiian history and culture, and current Native Hawaiian social, cultural, educational, economic, and political trends.
      • Community relations including resourcing, networking, and relationship management.

      And these qualifications:

      • Bachelor’s degree and 5 or more years’ relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
      • Must be able to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.
      • Strong planning, administrative, and organizational skills. Attention to detail a must.
      • Strong collaborative, team-oriented working style.
      • High level of professionalism and excellent written and interpersonal communication skills to enable interactions with external stakeholders.
      • A resourceful self-starter with a proven ability to multi-task and be an effective team player with minimal supervision.
      • Experience and demonstrated success in devising and executing effective communications and outreach strategies for projects that require substantial involvement from multiple stakeholder interests.
      • Strong command of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required.
      • Experience in a corporate setting is required, preferably at a publicly traded company.
      • Experience with social media tools and strategy.
      • Attendance at early morning or evening events, some weekend work and travel may be required.

      Extra credit if you have:

      • Photography skills or experience directing photography or videography.
      • Experience working in or with an advertising/communications firm.
      • Experience managing vendor relationships.
      • Experience or exposure to working in a unionized industry.
      • Established relationships with, and/or knowledge of, key community organizations and leaders, including news media representatives.

      Physical Requirements:

      • Sit for up to 50 minutes per hour or more.
      • Walk up to 30 minutes per hour or more.
      • Stand up to 50 minutes per hour or more.
      • Lift up to 30 lbs.

      The annual salary range for this position in Hawaii is $89,400 - $121,620. The salary offered will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
