      Position Summary (Primary Function)

      As a valued member of the communications team this position will support the airport’s communications and customer experience initiatives and strategies. Preserving strong media relationships will be an essential part of this position’s responsibilities. In addition, the Communications Specialist is responsible for creating engaging digital content and messaging. The overall goal of this position is to maintain, elevate, and measure the airport’s positive image with the traveling public and throughout Upstate South Carolina.

      Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

      • Collaborates with the Communications Manager to plan, develop, and execute public relations campaigns and, projects designed to create and maintain a favorable public image for the airport.

      • Consistently conducts passenger intercept surveys to measure the passenger opinion of the airport, facilities and services.

      • Responsible for the review and upkeep of all airport websites to ensure content is changed and updated as necessary or as requested by the Communications Manager.

      • Responsible for responding to customer complaints and comments sent via email and social media.

      • Evaluates researches and responds to requests for general airport information.

      • Collaborates with the Communications Manager to create and execute multi-level social media campaigns designed to engage the community.

      • Collaborates with graphic designers or creative services to execute the production of airport literature, promotional materials and other forms of communication for publication and information.

      • Assists the Communications Manager in creating media pitches, press releases, media briefings, and press conferences, identifies story ideas, and helps to manage media requests in a timely and progressional manner.

      • Maintains a contact list of local, regional, national, and industry reporters.

      • Serves as backup media spokesperson at the direction of the Communications Manager or Vice President, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer.

      • Manages airport photo library.

      • Assists the Communications Manager with the development and execution of special events and serves as the lead on some events as directed.

      • Provides additional communications support as necessary.

      • Participates in the development, implementation, and publication of internal communications tools and events.

      • Monitors communications and industry trends and makes recommendations to the Communications Manager on new media platforms and trends to implement.

      • Tracks and analyzes social media analytics to gain insights on traffic, engagement, sentiment, and effectiveness.

      • Writes, strategizes, and develops digital content creation for multiple audiences, including public and internal newsletters, blogs, and articles.

      • Supports the Communications Manager in programs and initiatives to enhance the customer experience.

      • Monitors social media channels for mentions, trending content, competitor benchmarking, and insights on customer sentiment and brand image.

      • Other duties as assigned.

      Education Requirements

      • BA Degree in Journalism, Communications or a related field or equivalent work experience.

      Experience Requirements

      • Minimum of three years’ work experience in the field of communications and or the practice of general public and/or community relations.

      • Excellent communications skills including written, oral and presentation capabilities.

      • Graphic design skills preferred.

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

      • Proficient in using the latest versions of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Email and web searches.

      • Ability to multitask.

      • Must be able to think creatively and strategically, have excellent judgment and be able to work within a changing environment.

      Licenses Required

      • Valid Driver’s License.

      Latitude/Independent Judgment/Accuracy

      • The Communications Manager establishes workflow for the position.

      • The Communications Manager establishes workflow for projects driven by communications initiatives.

      • Diligence must be exercised when handling confidential information.

      • Responsible for own work, but must coordinate work with others.

      Working Conditions

      • Physical Demand – Little physical effort required. Some light lifting, carrying, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, stooping and kneeling requirements necessary up to 20% of the time. Sitting required 80% of the time.

      • Mental and or Visual Demands- Mental and visual demands vary with function performed. Consistent mental attention is needed to monitor work flow and respond efficiently.

      • Attentiveness to work procedures will reduce potential risk of minor injury in certain work areas.

      • Exposed to normal office environment and limited industrial environment.

      • This position is required to work weekends and holidays, rotating shift assignments, and overtime duty, based on the needs of the department. Will be subject to recall outside of normal duty hours.

      Other Requirements

      • Must be able to complete and pass a background investigation, drug screening, and physical examination as per Federal, State, and GSP Airport District requirements.
