      SECTION 1 SPECIAL SELECTION FACTOR(S)-THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED:

      Qualifications for Current Arizona Department of Corrections Employees:

      • A Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Public Administration, Business Administration, Behavioral Health, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or Education OR must be enrolled in a program of study at an accredited university or college at the time of application.
      • Continuing education and completion of a degree will be an SMAART goal for the employee with a requirement to complete a degree within a specified period of time.
      • Those applicants with a completed qualifying degree will be exempt from the written exam.

      Qualifications for Non-Arizona Department of Corrections Applicants:

      • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Public Administration, Business Administration, Behavioral Health, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or Education.
      • Those applicants with a qualifying degree will be exempt from the written exam.

      ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

      • PERFORMANCE EVALUATION – Must receive a rating of meets expectations or better.
      • SUSPENSION – An employee is ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity during the one year period from the date the incident that caused the suspension occurred or the incident was reported by the employee, whichever occurred last.
      • VOLUNTARY DEMOTIONS – Employees accepting a voluntary demotion shall be required to remain in the classification/position requested for a period of at least two years before being considered for appointment to any other position. Voluntary demotion applicants must have an approved voluntary demotion memo on file with the Central Promotional Register to be considered for a job offer. No job offers will be made without an approved voluntary demotion. The job offer will be made to the next available candidate.
      • DEMOTIONS (DISCIPLINARY) – Any employee who has been demoted one level shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for two years from the date of the demotion. If demoted more than one level, the employee shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for three years from the date of the demotion. A demotion received after the promotional process has started and prior to the promotion shall result in the permanent removal from that CPR. Once removed from a CPR for a demotion, the applicant shall not be eligible to compete for a Correctional Officer Series position until two or three years, depending on the number of levels demoted, after the date of the demotion. The first day served of the demotion shall be considered the effective date of the demotion.
      • Note: You MUST maintain the above additional requirements to remain in the recruitment process OR on the register developed from this recruitment.

      SECTION 2 EVALUATION AND TESTING PROCESS:

      Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of training and experience. Please note the following:

      • Adequate work history identifying experience, duties, qualifications, selective requirements, and/or preferences must be reflected on the resume in order to receive applicable credit.
      • ALL RELEVANT INFORMATION IS SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION.
      • Each promotion or different position with the same employer must be listed separately on the resume.
      • Applicants who meet the KSAs and selective preferences will be invited to the next appropriate step. Applicants who achieve or exceed a passing score on the oral board interview will have their names placed on the Central Promotional Register after other promotional points are included, if any.
      • NOTE: Notification of eligibility to test will be e-mailed directly. Applicants who have not received a notification to test should immediately contact their Personnel Liaison or the Central Promotional Register section. Study references/resources are posted on the ADC Internet and Intranet websites.


      SECTION 3 OTHER PROMOTIONAL POINTS:

      • PASS FIT PRO (VOLUNTARY): Maintain 50%=40 pts. You must supply a copy of your voluntary physical fitness certificate.
      • DEGREES: AA=20pts; BA=30pts; MA=40pts. You must supply a copy of your transcript(s) for college degrees.
      • NOTE: Copies of your transcripts and Fit Pro certificate must be received by the Central Promotional Register by Friday, June 21, 2024, to receive credit. The CPR email is cpr@azadc.gov

      SECTION 4 REGISTER/JOB OFFERS:

      • The register developed from this recruitment will expire when a new statewide register is developed. However, D.O. 504 specifies that a register shall be active for the period of time specified in the announcement or until it no longer satisfies recruitment needs, whichever occurs first. Registers may be extended when necessary.
      • JOB OFFERS: When a position becomes available the top five candidates with that geographic preference will attend a second interview. After completion of the interviews, the hiring manager will select the candidate to be offered the position and all other candidates will remain on the Register. If you wish to change your geographic preference, please submit a revised form through your Personnel Liaison. A candidate who declines any two promotional/job offers in the location(s) for which they have indicated their geographical preference(s), shall be placed at the end of the register. If a candidate declines a third promotional/job offer their name will be permanently removed from the register.
      • Employees who are job offered and have been out of security positions for more than two years will be required to attend COTA training.
      • NOTE: If you are currently working outside of the correctional series you will have to undergo the correctional officer hire procedures. The procedures may include medical/physical, psychological evaluation, updated background investigation, and the completion of the Correctional Officer Training Academy.

      SECTION 5 EDUCATIONAL STIPEND:

      *Positions in this classification are eligible for an educational stipend: Associate’s Degree 2.5%; Bachelor's Degree: 5%; Master's Degree or above: 7.5%. If you have completed one of these degrees, submit the Education Supplement-Security form Education Supplement and documentation of your degree as noted on the form with your application. If eligible and appointed, the stipend amount will be effective on the date of your appointment. Education requests submitted after the date of appointment are effective at the beginning of the pay period when they are received by personnel. This stipend is subject to available funding and may be canceled at any time.

      Job Duties:

      SECTION 6 EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

      Individual positions may be responsible for some or all of the listed duties and/or other related duties. Devises a schedule of work for self on a periodic basis. Confers with representatives of various community resources seeking assistance for offenders. Informs offender of resources for help in the community and of other facts and events that will help offender in terms of support, treatment, rehabilitation or independent living. Confers with staff of local groups to inform them of services provided by the agency or program. Confers with local officials regarding problems or questions affecting the program or work system. Writes case notes, warrants of violation of release conditions; and reports summarizing data acquired by investigation and research into offenders’ social, family, financial, and employment situation as a basis for a case action. Writes reports on offender activity and progress; refers offenders to resources for training or counseling. Testifies at court and administrative due process hearings. Discusses current situations with offender; listens, offers suggestions, and helps offender with perception, self-realization, or orientation, in accordance with program goals and objectives.

      Meets, as needed, with the family of the offender (usually including the offender) and leads a discussion of problems or resolutions. Develops treatment or service plan for offender based on knowledge of offender’s situations gained from interviewing and gathering case information. Conducts thorough investigation of the community and family life of the offender, including home visits and collateral contacts with school officials, police, employers, and others as a basis for case disposition and decision. Attends staff meetings of work unit or section, under the direction of work supervisor; gives and receives information helpful in work unit or work system operation. Confers with superiors, presenting and resolving difficult problems or questions, discussing plans and actions to be taken, and making decisions. Performs related work as required.

      WORK CONDITIONS: Shift work; extended sitting; extensive reading and writing. Some light lifting with occasional heavy demands. May be exposed to hazards associated with the security and guidance of inmates.

      Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

      Knowledge of: Arizona Criminal Code and criminal/civil court and administrative hearing procedures; Federal, State, and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing the adult community corrections system; principles, methods and techniques of investigating, surveillance, interviewing, assessing and paraprofessional counseling; principles and techniques of caseload management; principles of sociology and psychology; cultural and socioeconomic differences and effects on human behaviors; rules, regulations and procedures of the work system and knowledge and application of evidenced-based community risk and needs models.

      Skill in/Ability to: Applying and interpreting Arizona Criminal Code and the applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing the adult community corrections system; conducting investigations, searches, surveillance, and interviews; managing caseloads; applying the principles and methods of sociology and psychology in interactions with offenders; crisis intervention; verbal and written communications; interpersonal relationships.

      Pre-Employment Requirements:

      Some positions require a medical/physical evaluation, psychological examination, pre-employment drug screening, and a background investigation prior to appointment. A current Arizona driver's license appropriate to the assignment is required at the time of appointment. As a condition of continued employment, employees in a safety-sensitive position may be subject to random drug testing, as required by Department Policy. Selected candidates must successfully complete the seven-week Correctional Officer Training Academy.

      In an effort to maintain a safe environment, all employees are required to take a Tuberculosis (TB) test during their New Employee Orientation and every year thereafter.
