      About The Division

      Join the Legislative Affairs Division as a Government Relations Specialist! Work involves serving as a liaison between a state agency and governmental and legislative entities. Legislative Affairs provides information and support to the Comptroller’s office and works with lawmakers to advance the interests of Texas taxpayers and the public.

      SALARY RANGE:

      -Government Relations Specialist I: $5,750-$6,000 ($69,000-$72,000)

      -Government Relations Specialist II: $6,000-$6,670 ($72,000-$80,040)

      Minimum Qualifications

      Education:

      • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree. (Complete copies of college transcripts must be furnished to the divisional hiring representative at the time of the interview for positions requiring a college degree, and/or specific educational credits.)

      Preferred Education:

      · Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Administration or Business

      Experience:

      • Two (2) years of experience working with the federal or state legislature, legislative staff, or research services
      • Experience conducting policy or legislative research
      • Knowledge of the Texas legislative process
      • Familiarity with legislative research software and applications
      • Skill in effective verbal and written communication
      • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite

      Preferred Experience:

      Government Relations Specialist I:

      · Coordinating responses to legislative inquiries.

      · Drafting and editing legislative correspondence.

      · Preparing report summaries of meetings and hearings.

      Government Relations Specialist II:

      • Four (4) years of experience working with the federal or state legislature, legislative staff, or research services.
      • Experience with the development of legislative recommendations
      • Providing testimony before legislative committees.
      • Coordinating responses to legislative inquires.
      • Drafting and editing legislative correspondence.
      • Preparing report summaries of meetings and hearings.

      Substitutions

      · One (1) additional year of the full-time minimum experience as stated above may substitute for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education with a maximum of 120 semester hours (four years).

      · Master’s Degree may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

      · Doctorate’s Degree may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

      In this role you will:

      · Participates in agency activities related to the legislative session and attends legislative hearings and meeting with legislators, legislative staff, and other legislative liaisons.

      · Coordinates responses to legislative inquiries, reviews and edits legislative correspondence, and effectively communicates agency policies and procedures to elected officials, staff, state agency personnel and other stakeholders.

      · Monitors standing and interim committee schedules and agendas and communicates relevant information to agency management.

      · Coordinates agency interaction and testimony before legislative committees.

      · Performs other related work as assigned.

      · Assists in drafting bills and amendments for legislative consideration.
