      Position Highlights The Conservation Assistant II is a 1.0 FTE, Extended Temporary, staff position functioning in the Conservation Lab of the Arizona State Museum (ASM) at the University of Arizona (UA) reporting to the Conservation Laboratory Manager. The incumbent assists conservation personnel coordinate the day-to-day operations of the Conservation Laboratory. Key duties include oversight of intern and volunteer scheduling, assists with the coordination of lab activities, maintains and purchases conservation supplies and equipment, ensures compliance with safety regulations for equipment and technologies in the conservation lab, and assists with preventive conservation tasks.

      The ideal candidate is highly organized and detail oriented. The candidate is able to prioritize multiple projects, is skillful at problem solving, and has an interest in working with volunteers and the public. Applicants should have an appreciation of the responsibilities and cultural sensitivities involved in working with Native American objects. The job requires that the person can handle museum objects carefully and they will also do some minor conservation treatment with supervision.

      Duties & Responsibilities

      Duties and Responsibilities:

      • Maintains inventory of supplies and orders supplies for laboratory.
      • Maintains cleanliness of the laboratory.
      • Assists with laboratory operations in compliance with accreditation standards, safety and environmental regulations, and other applicable requirements.
      • Tracks and coordinates the flow of objects into the laboratory.
      • Assists with coordinating activities, volunteers, interns, and researchers in the laboratory.
      • Organizes the image and written documentation created through condition reports, treatment reports, technical studies, and surveys.
      • Assists with the preparation of conservation condition/treatment reports and digital photo-documentation as needed.
      • Assists with preventative conservations tasks and data collection. I. Assists with the fabrication of custom enclosures.
      • May be required to work with hazardous materials.
      • May give Conservation Laboratory tours to the public.
      • May compile information used in preparation of grant proposals and publications.
      • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. N. May serve on museum committees as appropriate.
      • Additional duties may be assigned.

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

      • Basic knowledge of museum and conservation profession.
      • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
      • Demonstrated manual dexterity.
      • Ability to operate a DSLR digital camera.
      • Proficiency with various computer programs (Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud).
      • Ability to work with hazardous materials.
      • Knowledge of current museum issues related to exhibition, loan, storage, and repatriation.
      • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and ordering and inventory control for museum conservation laboratory.
      • Knowledge of chemical, hazardous waste, and industrial hygiene safety requirements and standards for conservation laboratories.
      • Familiarity with the issues of museum collections and Native American material culture and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).

      Physical Requirements:

      • Must be able to move/lift/transport up to 40 lbs. of large objects/artifacts and boxes.
      Minimum Qualifications
      • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required and 3 years of relevant experience required.
      Preferred Qualifications
      • Experience handling museum objects and working in a museum environment.
      • Bachelor's degree preferred.
