Mentoring is available for newly appointed consultants at the start of their consultant careers.

      Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry to work in a Community Memory Assessment Service.

It is anticipated that the Consultant will work with the CMAS MDT on a consultative basis providing clinical leadership and supervision to a team of advanced level practitioners. The CMAS Consultant will provide direct care for a small number of complex patients and will be available for face to face/ telephone/email/Microsoft Teams advice to the wider team. The consultant will be the Designated Medical Prescriber providing clinical supervision to the Independent Nurse Prescribers in the team.

All patients referred to CMAS have a comprehensive initial assessment undertaken by nursing staff. Patients are then discussed in the weekly Multidisciplinary Team Meeting to provide a diagnostic formulation and management plan. Patients then receive a diagnostic appointment either with nursing staff or the Consultant for the diagnosis to be delivered and cognitive enhancing treatment started if appropriate. Follow up of patients, including monitoring of specific drug treatment and post diagnostic support for dementia, is primarily done by nursing staff.

There is ready access to a comprehensive neuroradiology service and neuropsychology assessment.

Assessment and support for more complex patients with dementia, who are ill-suited to be managed on an out-patient basis, is provided by the Older Peoples CMHTs.

  • About the company

National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly-funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery—a health service based on clinical need, not ability to pay. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom apart from dental treatment and optical care.
