- In this position the Co-Op student researcher will be trained on microbial fermentation and techniques in culturing microbes in suspension and biofilm form. This will include skills in aseptic technique, biofilm substrate material handling, preparation, and sterilization. As well as microbial culture storage, preservation, and propagation techniques.
- A primary goal of this position will be to work closely with an industry partner to evaluate interaction of a microbial organism with various substrates. This will require evaluation of the biofilm growth by gravimetric methods, visualize the biofilm through microscopy, and potentially other avenues of analysis based on guidance from our collaborator.
- Other analyses may include quantitative metabolite analysis via UHPLC and cell counting or quantification.
- Strong laboratory experience specifically with microbial fermentation, media preparation, and aseptic technique.
- This position will be research based and will require strong organizational and communication skills in clearly presenting experimental results and providing updates.
- Use of biosafety cabinet for microbial culturing including familiarity at various scales from shake flasks to benchtop bioreactors.
- Understanding of analytical techniques and concepts that include (U)HPLC.
- Experience with basic light microscopy would be beneficial in this position.
- Use of basic computer software such as Microsoft Office programs.
