      Job Description:

      General Description: The Data Integrity Specialist is responsible for investigating and resolving patient identity issues for OU Health when duplicate or other medical record number issues are identified, under the direction of the Administrative Manager of HIM Operations. This position communicates with multiple departments enterprise-wide to coordinate correct and accurate patient information and other required data for new and existing registrations. This individual is responsible for auditing of medical record number (MRN) and duplicate encounter creation. The specialist also supports patient matching activities for the health information exchange. The Specialist will identify and refer complex discrepancies caused when two patients’ information is combined under one MRN for resolution.

      Essential Responsibilities:

      • Responsible for the chart correction process in the Epic environment
      • Identifies, research, and corrects data integrity issues within the Master Patient Index (MPI)
      • Receives and triages calls from patients, providers, insurance companies, attorneys and clinical departments related to patient identity.
      • Reviews clinical documentation when two MRNs exist for one patient, determines which number to retain and merges the information in the electronic record, timely and accurately.
      • Educates front line user on the chart correction process, identifying areas of process improvement.
      • Works with medical staff and hospital employees on the chart correction process to be completed at designated computers.
      • Communicates MPI data integrity issues to all impacted ancillary departments.
      • Receives, processes, and analyzes health information for completeness, timeliness, and accuracy.
      • Audits accuracy of electronic and manual entry and facilitates resolution of any discrepancies.
      • Refers suspected cases of identity theft to the appropriate department.
      • Assists with the daily operations of the department and departmental related projects / processes.

      General Responsibilities:

      • Performs other duties as assigned.

      Minimum Requirements:

      Education: Associates in Health Information Management or related field required.

      Experience: None required. 1 or more years of experience in Health Information Management and supporting integrity of a MPI or Person Identity preferred.

      OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

      License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) required within 6 months in position.

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

      • Understands pertinent regulatory guidelines such as Joint Commission and HIPAA.
      • Existing knowledge of the facility’s clinical/operational processes, challenges and EPIC environment.
      • Knowledgeable of current application information technologies and trends in healthcare.
      • Demonstrates ability to independently make accurate decisions regarding patient record corrections.
      • Ability to be proactive in identifying improvement opportunities in workflow processes.
      • Ability to understand the patient safety relationship between the patient’s Medical Record Number and access to all clinical information.
      • Ability to understand and apply rules of confidentiality.
      • Ability to pay attention to detail.
      • Experience with MPI strongly preferred.
      • Proficient with the use of Microsoft Office tools
