- Responsible for analyzing highly complex financial and credit information according to internal underwriting standards, investor guidelines, and federal regulations. Reviews and comprehends Mortgage lending and operating standards as well as Fannie Mae Seller’s, FHA, & Servicers Guide and stays current on all updates and guideline/requirements from HUD. Fulfills a critical role of Underwriting mortgage loans for our direct-lending approved as a lender and loan servicer by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA); the Veterans Administration (VA); the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae); the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac); the Government National Mortgage Association (Ginnie Mae); the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA); the Nevada Housing Division; the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS); the California Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS); and many other major secondary market institutions.
- Acts as liaison with members, real estate agents/brokers, title companies, loan consultants and co-workers to facilitate a prompt, efficient closing of each loan.
- Responsible for providing strong and clear communication to processors, underwriters, mortgage professionals and borrowers regarding documents needed for mortgage loan files to ensure quick turnaround time.
- Using established guidelines diagnoses loan package situations and proceeds accordingly. Enters all information into LOS system/DU with accuracy and accountability and according to their Specific Agency Underwriting Authority utilizing their current designations.(FHA, HUD, VA, USDA,etc).
- Documents loans to ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements and in compliance with Agency Requirements.
- Performs HMDA disposition of canceled and declined loans in compliance with Regulation B requirements, including second signed second look loan reviews.
- Evaluates current Mortgage procedures, recommends changes and implements new procedures when appropriate.
- Maintains member and other sensitive information with confidentiality.
- Follows up on all Agency audit files and internal audit files. Researches and resolves any issues, completes documentation and audit responses.
- Based on decisions from the Credit Committee; underwrites, evaluates, and assists with the processing of all Collection Dept. Workout loans.
- Supports and participates in continuous improvement activities. Represents the Credit Union in a positive and professional manner. Maintains member, team members and other sensitive information with confidentiality. Treats co-workers and members with respect.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Minimum five years Mortgage underwriting experience with the most recent two years in underwriting FHA, VA, USDA.
- Experience with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Ginnie Mac, HFA.
- Solid knowledge of FNMA, FHA/HUD and FHLMC underwriting and secondary marketing guidelines. Demonstrated knowledge of automated origination and underwriting technology.
- Knowledge of Regulatory Compliance guidelines. General knowledge of loan processing and closing guidelines. Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook and intermediate knowledge of the internet.
- Demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving ability - Ability to analyze and evaluate loan requests and make sound credit decisions.

Responsible for evaluation of residential loan applications and supporting documentation of income, assets, credit and property, review and approval/denial of loan applications based on investor guidelines. Determines stipulations of loans and communicates directly with required parties to resolve stipulations. Assist other team members with files which exceed approval guidelines and exceptions. Has Direct Endorsement Delegation with a current CHUM number from HUD/FHA. Evaluates the degree and seriousness of data discrepancies and analyzes loan structure to ensure loan complies with investor guidelines.
