      WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

      The Deputy Director, Solomon Islands provides strategic leadership for the organization's planning efforts and establish conservation priorities . Serving as a point of contact for government agencies, organizations, foundations, and the academic community, the Deputy Director may lead in identifying and managing donors for the program.
      Their role involves promoting best practices, providing training, and analyzing organizational success measures. They also develop key partnerships with public and private organizations to address technical issues and communicate solutions, innovative methods, and tools relevant to the natural environment. The Deputy Director works to establish the organization as a major partner within their designated area, defining priorities and leading teams to enhance program effectiveness.

      In addition, they engage local communities and negotiate solutions with government agencies. They develop and implement strategies to support and improve program efforts. The role may involve working in various weather conditions, remote locations, difficult terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Frequent domestic and/or international travel, as well as evening and weekend hours, may be required.

      The position is a full-time, fixed-term role for three years, with the potential for extension based on funding and project outcomes. Reporting to the Solomon Islands Country Program Director, the role is based in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

      WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU

      The Deputy Director, Solomon Islands oversees all aspects of conservation and scientific initiatives within The Nature Conservancy's Solomon Islands Business Unit. Collaborating with the Solomon Islands Executive Leadership Team, they play a pivotal role in shaping and prioritizing the organization's conservation efforts. Leading a diverse team, the Director ensures the delivery of impactful and inclusive conservation programs across the Solomon Islands. This role involves developing strategic, scientific, and technical capabilities in the environmental conservation field.

      Essential Functions

      The Deputy Director, Solomon Islands oversees the following areas:

      • Program Management

        The Deputy Director will primarily concentrate on Program Management within the Solomon Islands Leadership Team, recognising it as a strategic discipline that encompasses essential functions critical for the successful execution of projects. This includes budgeting to allocate resources effectively, people management for fostering cohesive team dynamics and staff performance, work-planning aligned with organisational goals, and proactive risk management. These integral functions collectively empower Program Managers to orchestrate complex projects with efficiency, ensuring successful outcomes and making substantial contributions to the overall effectiveness of organisational initiatives.
      • Partnerships

      The Deputy Director aims to establish the organization as a key partner within their designated area. They establish crucial partnerships with both public and private organizations to address technical challenges and communicate effective solutions and best practices, including innovative methods, and tools relevant to the natural environment. They serve as a liaison with government agencies, other organizations, foundations, and the academic community.

      • Community Engagement

      The Deputy Director engages with local communities and garners influential support for conservation initiatives. They negotiate solutions with government agencies and major institutions, to preserve and protect natural ecosystems. They provide quality control/assurance to the different teams that engage community in their work.

      • Conservation Operations

      The Deputy Director is involved in developing and implementing strategies to support and improve operational efforts in the field. They disseminate best practices, provides training, and conducts analyses to optimize organizational success.

      WHAT YOU'LL BRING
      • BA/BS degree and 7 years' experience in conservation practice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
      • Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation.
      • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.
      • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
      • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.
      • Experience negotiating.
