The Prince William County Department of Social Services is seeking to hire a highly motivated person to fill Detention Specialist positions at the Molinari Juvenile Shelter in Manassas, Virginia and at the Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) also located in Manassas on Rt. 234. The Molinari Juvenile Shelter (MJS) is a short-term residential program for boys and girls ages 10 to 17 who are in crisis and need temporary placement. The detention center provides secure custody to juveniles between the ages of 12-20 who are criminally charged pending court adjudication, waiting for transfer to another facility or an appropriate placement. Both programs afford a structured environment where residents can begin to address their problems. Hiring Bonus - this position qualifies for a one-time cash signing bonus of $5,000 subject to availability of funds! This bonus will be paid in two installments and is subject to all applicable tax withholding and reporting requirements. The first installment of $2,500 is payable upon the County’s first regular pay date following your position start and the final $2,500 installment will be payable on the pay date following the completion of your probation. ABOUT THIS ROLE:
In this role you will be responsible for ensuring the security and welfare of the juveniles in your care; organizing and supervising recreational, educational and life skills programs; conducting group activities on topics such as problem solving, anger management and decision making; responding to disorderly youth and, when necessary; facilitating video conferencing for court hearings. To be successful you will need experience working with at-risk youth, preferably in a secure facility; ability to work independently and make decisions based on established policy and procedure; commitment to modeling positive decision-making skills and guiding youth to making better choices; ability to perform physical restraints when necessary, using the “Handle with Care” techniques; and ability to utilize basic monitoring equipment such as video cameras and radios.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or G.E.D. and 1 year of related experience.

PREFERENCES:

• Experience working with at-risk youth;
• Experience working in law enforcement or security;
• Experience teaching life skills, problem solving, anger management and decision-making;
• Experience using physical restraint techniques such as "Handle with Care."

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:
12-hour shifts: Day 7 am-7 pm or Night 7 pm-7 am

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
In accordance with Department of Juvenile Justice regulations, the selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment physical and background checks prior to receiving a final offer. All DSS staff members are required to provide emergency human services work in the event of an emergency disaster. Must have a valid driver's license.

ENTRY SALARY RANGE: $22.68 - $33.35 Hourly
