Provide leadership, direction and training for the department, to the NSC, and the field on all animal care and adoption related matters.
Develop, grow and maintain programs that educate associates and customers on responsible pet ownership in partnership with various departments throughout the company (e.g., Performance and Learning, Marketing, etc.).
Provide cross functional support and management of expenses related to companion animal care including vet expense, store use and habitat repairs.
Partner with the VP of Animal Care, Education, and Compliance as well as Legal on proposed legislation and judgments that impact Petco’s business processes and or animal welfare.
Partner with Vendor Operations and CMO organization to audit animal vendors according to Petco’s Standards of Excellence.
Domestic day and overnight travel are required
Provide leadership and direction to the NSC and the field on all adoption, regulatory, animal and animal care related concerns.
Provide leadership and direction to the Animal Care, Education and Compliance team on all national animal care and regulatory issues and programs.
Provide leadership and direction to the National Adoption Manager on all national adoption opportunities, issues and programs.
Responsible for the design, implementation and continued maintenance of all of the company policies and procedures as they relate to animal care.
In partnership with other NSC departments and the field, lead and participate in committees addressing animal care and compliance issues throughout the company.
Partner with visual department to review all new and suggested changes to animal care signing.
Work with the PETCO Foundation and the entire field team to promote THINK ADOPTION FIRST and facilitate better partnerships with animal welfare agencies and adoption groups.
Responsible for creating and maintaining all animal planograms.
Partner with Merchandising and the Chief Veterinarian to review, revise and implement Vendor Certification program
Responsible for creating and maintaining improved reporting and analysis for animal care, compliance and adoption information.
Partner with cross functional teams to ensure stores are compliant with animal laws, judgments and regulatory guidelines.
Create and maintain store specific reports to analyze Animal Care and Adoption performance by store, district, zone region and company.
Lead the committee to include Merchandising, IS, Operations and other departments as needed, to maintain the Incident Report portal to be more user friendly and useful for everyone.
Special projects as assigned.
A four-year college degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
A minimum 10 years’ experience in a multi store retail organization is required including 5 years progressively responsible experience in a management position and 7 years in companion animal care is required.
Expert knowledge of companion animal care and husbandry is required. Well-developed experience resolving regulatory issues and working with regulatory agencies are required.
A demonstrated, proven advanced ability to develop programs, policies and procedures, to lead, provide direction, manage projects and resolve complex problems is also required.
Strong experience with computer systems including MS Office is required. Additionally, excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills are required due to the frequent interaction with all levels of management and staff while making proposals, reporting results, conducting training, etc.

Position Purpose:
Develop and implement strategies to improve and maintain consistency in the care, health and sale of animals. Identify and implement Petco standards in conjunction with animal welfare standards and regulatory requirements through the development and execution of policies, programs, and processes. Design of animal care education projects involving multiple departments to ensure uncompromising care, education, and husbandry is being provided for the companion animals in the Petco stores and for making this information available to our customers and associates. Manage the communications to and from the stores and headquarters (NSC) as it relates to animal care and Think Adoption First.
This role will have significant impact on PETCO’s brand image with associates, customers, online community, government agencies, animal welfare organizations and vendors. This position will develop and ensure execution of all animal care policies and procedures. In addition to P&P, this position will be viewed by regulatory agencies as the position that ensures compliance to regulatory requirements and protect PETCO from negative monetary and public image issues. This position will drive the Think Adoption First initiative and develop strategy and implementation plan for Petco stores and adoption partners.

The pay ranges outlined below are presented in accordance with state-specific regulations. These ranges may differ in other areas and could be subject to variation based on regulatory minimum wage requirements. Actual pay rates will depend on factors such as position, location, level of experience, and applicable state or local minimum wage laws. If the regulatory minimum wage exceeds the minimum indicated in the pay range below, the regulatory minimum wage will be the minimum rate applied.
$163,100.00 - $244,600.00/ year
