Associates Degree in Health Information Management required
Bachelor’s Degree preferred
Certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) is required.
Seven to ten years of progressively responsible experience in a Health Information Management Department required, with experience in a Level 1 Trauma, teaching organization preferred.
Five years of previous managerial experience is required.
Proficiency in all competency areas including but not limited to auditing, clinical records, privacy partnership responsibilities, supervisory responsibilities, patient rights, safety, and sanitation
Must demonstrate excellent communication skills to work effectively with physicians, other hospital staff, employees, and the public
Knowledge of JCAHO standards for maintaining patient records
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action
Must be knowledgeable of medical records practices and procedures as well as the laws, regulations, and guidelines governing medical records functions in the post-acute care facility
Must have the analytical ability to implement and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the medical records department
Requires comprehensive knowledge of systems and methods used in clinical data collection and record maintenance
Comprehensive understanding of all systems, equipment and materials used.
Comprehensive knowledge of regulatory requirements and the ability to provide documentation of such requirements when needed.
Ability to prepare correspondence and statistical and narrative reports.
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
Ability to work with interdisciplinary groups of all levels including senior leadership.
Full supervisory responsibility for the Heath Information Management team, including hiring, firing, recruiting, training, performance management, professional development, etc.
Responsible for ensuring standardization and “best practices” for HIM processes
Develop and implement HIM tactics that support the strategic plan and new business development opportunities
Annually review and update tactics to reflect changing strategic opportunities
Oversee the review, approval and implementation of department job descriptions, policies, process guides, assuring the department’s compliance with State, Federal and other regulatory organization requirements
Oversee the management, retention, access, and destruction of paper based medical records within the organization
Direct and manage departmental projects to ensure proper completion according to time schedule and budget
Management and oversight responsibility of the departmental budget including participation in budget development, approval responsibility and monitoring for productivity and cost
Participate in the development, implementation, and updates of applications that support the electronic medical record (EMR) and document management systems
Participate in quality performance activities that support a state of readiness for regulatory surveys and audits
Ensure and oversees HIM practices that support quality performance initiatives
Direct team training to ensure there is caregiver proficiency in HIM processes that promotes excellence and quality outcomes
Maintain department productivity, quality, and efficiency for all processes within the department
Serve as an internal consultant on health information management issues and protocol
Serve as a member of designated leadership councils, policy, and quality committees
Maintains confidentiality of all proprietary and/or confidential information
Actively implements the compliance program and Code of Conduct and ensures participation by department staff
Will contribute to and/or lead interdisciplinary teams and projects
Ensures compliance with external standards involving the Joint Commission, HCFA, and other regulatory or governmental agencies in order to maintain accreditation, including but not limited to timely submission of delinquency information and birth certificate information.
Oversees the timely and accurate reporting of birth certificate/registry information to the state, ensuring accuracy and completeness of data captured by departmental computer systems.
Oversees, Release of Information vendor and serves as a resource to them.
Assumes miscellaneous delegated managerial responsibilities and performs other duties as assigned.
Serves as one of the Custodians of the medical record with the Senior Director of HIM & CDCI.

This position is hybrid, with in-person hours primarily in the Yawkey Building, Boston MA. First consideration will be given to qualified candidates who are local to Boston Medical Center.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director Health Information Management is responsible for directing the planning, organizing and execution of health information management (HIM) services. Manages the compilation, processing, and maintenance of patient health information. Acts as a consultant on health data management, documentation improvement, medical record release of information, confidentiality, and data security issues. Assists the medical staff in complying with regulations governing the accurate and timely completion of medical records. Coordinates department policy and procedure creation. Contributes to facility statistical data collection. Responsible for oversight of members who maintain the patients’ clinical records, auditing, and providing pertinent staff education regarding recordkeeping procedures in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards. The Director supervises a team of Health Information Management employees
