      The Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions uses a public health approach to conduct rigorous scientific research to identify a range of innovative solutions to gun violence. Because gun violence disproportionately impacts communities of color, we ground our work in equity and seek insights from those most impacted on appropriate solutions. Using the best available science, our Center works towards expanding evidence-based advocacy and policy-making efforts. This combination of expertise creates a unique opportunity to turn public health research into action that reduces deaths and injuries from gun violence.


      The Center is seeking a Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to lead its equity and partnerships team in developing and implementing program strategies that center equity across its research, education, policy, and operations portfolios. This position will work with faculty, staff, students, and community partners to ensure equitable and inclusive approaches are incorporated to further the Center’s goal of achieving a solutions-oriented approaches to gun violence. The Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) will work closely with the Health Policy and Management Deputy Executive Director of Equity and report to the Director of Operations.


      This is a full-time, hybrid post (2 days a week) in Baltimore, MD.


      Specific Duties & Responsibilities


      Research, Policy, and Programs

      • Drafting of legislative policies and testimonies, policy briefs, white papers.
      • Center development activities and fundraising.
      • Lead and expand the use of racial equity impact assessments for a range of policies intended to reduce gun violence.
      • Lead research to assess the impact of penalties for illegal gun possession.


      Internal Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

      • Strategic leadership, training, and consultation to an interdisciplinary and growing team.
      • Support the Director of Operations in ensuring an equity lens in the implementation of Center’s action plans, projects, and processes.


      Community Engagement and Partnerships

      • Develop toolkits for community engagement with the Center and faculty members from the school of public health.
      • In partnership with the Deputy Executive Director of Equity and Equity team strategically identify national community organizations to build a network to leverage academic community partnerships to reduce gun violence.
      • Oversee development, maintenance, and growth of external partnerships across multiple sectors.
      • Research and develop metrics for measuring the effectiveness of partnership.

      • Experience with strategic planning, performance management, process improvement and/or program evaluation.


      Minimum Qualifications
      • Bachelor's Degree.
      • At least 3 years of related experience.


      Preferred Qualifications
      • Master’s Degree in public health or a related field, health equity, social justice, or equivalent years of experience

      Starting Salary Range: $61,070-$83,900-$106,710 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

      JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

      The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
