      Mass General Brigham is seeking an exceptional candidate to serve as Director, Research Computing

      A new Research Operations function was created in Digital in 2023 to focus on the provision of technology and data services to enable and accelerate research, and support MGB’s academic medical centers. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Research Operations, the Director, Research Computing will be a key member of the Research Operations team.

      The Director, Research Computing will be responsible for the development, implementation and operation of integrated, enterprise-wide research technology infrastructure, including high performance computing, data sharing and storage, devices and software tools. They will be overall accountable for meeting the current & future technology needs of the Academic Research function and serve as a strong partner to the Research community.

      The Director will collaborate with the Cloud and infrastructure teams in Digital and stakeholders across Research to co-create the vision, strategy and roadmap for the research technology platform. They will act as the custodian and subject matter expert within Digital for the technology needs and opportunities of Research. They will manage the delivery of technology services to Research, working across Digital to increasingly integrate with and leverage enterprise platforms in the Cloud.

      Success in the role will be measured by technology platform usage/penetration, research outcomes, service delivery and feedback from the Research community.

      Principal Duties and Responsibilities

      • Build partnerships with MGB research groups, understanding the diverse range of needs and working together to build short, medium and long term demand forecasts for technology services
      • Collaborate with the enterprise teams in Digital and stakeholders across Research to co-create the vision, strategy and roadmap for the research technology platform
      • Understand the suite of research technologies and to what business problems they can be applied, ensuring the platform and services remain relevant and meeting the majority needs of Researchers
      • Deliver expert support to Research groups throughout the grant lifecycle, from one-off ‘consults’ to providing embedded capabilities in large grant-funded programs
      • Manage all aspects of technology operations in alignment with ITIL best practice, including incident, problem & change management and maintaining performance, resilience and patch levels
      • Drive efficiency in products and services, such as self-service, in order to keep direct and indirect costs as low as possible
      • Continuously monitor external and internal factors changing the research landscape, including technology innovation, the changing regulatory environment and advances in medical research
      • Continuously look for opportunities to increase value derived from and usage of enterprise technology platforms
      • Create, manage, and share an overall research data product and service scorecard which articulates the value of the work undertaken
      • Work with strategic technology partners and other external parties to bring innovation and collaboration opportunities to MGB Research groups
      • Work in collaboration with Research support groups (e.g. Human Research Affairs, Research Management, etc.) to ensure proper coordination and regulatory approvals throughout the grant lifecycle
      • Partner with Research groups on grant submissions and healthcare/industry collaborations

      Qualifications

      • Minimum of 7-10 years of relevant experience in Research technology within Healthcare or aligned field
      • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred
      • A strong foundation and experience in working in research and a complex healthcare environment
      • Experience with infrastructure platforms, including Cloud
      • Deep consultative experience with demonstrated ability to translate business needs into technical programs which deliver real business value
      • Experience with managing regulatory research requirements including data, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and technology compliance.
      • Extensive experience leading large, complex projects, including strategic and tactical planning
      • Strong track record of operational excellence in budget, talent, and communication with demonstrated innovation in the field

      Supervisory Responsibility

      • Manage dedicated Research technology platforms and collaborate with enterprise Cloud/infrastructure teams
      • Directly manage ~20-25 staff and indirectly manage in excess of 50 people across Digital contributing to delivery of technology services to Research
      • Attract and retain qualified talent and provide leadership development, corrective action, etc.
      • Work collaboratively with MGB Digital PMO and Human Resources to assure effective and efficient business practices

      • This position requires occasional local travel to MGB sites, vendors, and/or conferences
