- At least 18 years of age at the time of application filing; and
- Graduation from a U.S. high school or equivalent, G.E.D. or equivalent from a U.S. institution, or a California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate; and
- Possession of a California State-approved Emergency Medical Technician I Certification.
- A valid California driver’s license is required at the time of filing. Applicants will be disqualified and not eligible for hire if their record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation (such as DUI).
- Applicants must attach a copy of the certification to the on-line application at the time of filing. The certification must be attached to the on-line application BEFORE the application is submitted. If the certification is attached AFTER the on-line application has been submitted, it will not be available to the City and applicants WILL NOT be credited with having submitted the certification. ANNUAL SALARY
$57,420 to $83,958; $84,626 to $123,734

DUTIES
An Emergency Medical Technician receives continuous training in driving a Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) rescue ambulance under
emergency and routine conditions and in administering first aid and basic life support services; assists LAFD personnel in providing first aid and
medical services to sick and injured persons; stocks ambulance with medical supplies and performs simple preventive maintenance work on an
ambulance; operates a rescue ambulance responding to emergency calls; renders first aid and basic life support services to sick and injured
patients at the scene and during transport to a hospital or other approved facility; and does related work.
Employees employed as Emergency Medical Technicians are appointed to positions which are designated as temporary training positions of up
to five years in accordance with Section 5.30 of the Rules of the Board of Civil Service Commissioners.REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a valid State of California Paramedic License (Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic).

The examination will consist of a qualifying (pass/fail) physical abilities test and an interview.
QUALIFYING PHYSICAL ABILITIES TEST: Candidates must pass a qualifying Physical Abilities Test. The physical abilities test measures a candidate on four factors: flexibility, upper body strength, lower body strength, and gross body coordination. During the physical abilities test, applicants may not leave the test site. Because you will be taking the physical abilities test, be sure to wear clothing appropriate for athletic activity.
Candidates will be notified by e-mail of the date, time, and location of the physical abilities test, which will be held in Los Angeles. It is anticipated that the physical abilities test will be held during the second half of November. Candidates who do not complete the physical abilities test will be considered to have failed the examination. Only those candidates who pass the qualifying physical abilities test will be invited for an interview.
INTERVIEW: The examination score will be based entirely on the interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Judgment and Decision Making, Analytical Ability, Safety Focus, Stress Tolerance, Teamwork, Oral Communication, Job Knowledge, including knowledge of the EMT role and functions including what services an EMT and/or Paramedic can legally provide; medical knowledge and skills required to make a general determination of what is wrong with a patient and to provide appropriate immediate treatment and basic life support, as well as performing EMT procedures sufficient to use them effectively in actual emergencies to assess patient condition, stabilize and safely move patient, and Local EMS Agency Policies; and other necessary skills, knowledge and abilities.
