Collaborate with and advise Human Resources on all legal issues related to the company's human capital.
Make recommendations to HR professionals on how to respond to legal issues or proposed changes in laws and regulations.
Investigate and respond to employee concerns, attorney demand letters, and other similar issues.
Draft, review, and revise employment policies, handbooks, template agreements for releases, notifications, leaves of absence, contracts, employment-related agreements, compensation plans, and other legal documents.
Remain abreast of employment-related legislation and significant court decisions and recommend policy modifications based on changes in the law.
Provide support for other corporate functions, including matters involving employee benefits, reductions in force, regulatory compliance, privacy and corporate security.
Provide legal advice and support on traditional labor matters
Work on other legal matters as may arise in the normal course of business.
5-7 years of employment law experience with a focus on employment litigation, employment contracts, and representing clients before administrative agencies in employment law and related claims.
Experience working with and advising an HR team on federal, state, and local employment and labor law issues, employee relations and compliance, investigations, and developing and implementing employment handbooks, policies and procedures.
Working knowledge of the various national and state laws that impact employment, including ACA, ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, FMLA, Internal Revenue Code, Worker’s Compensation, and other employment-related laws.
Some benefits experience preferred.
Experience successfully representing employers in employment-related litigation and mediation.
Experience with immigration law.
Experience with laws and regulations governing employee benefits.
Excellent academic credentials.
Licensed to practice law in Georgia or Ohio.
Excellent judgment and ability to provide practical advice on legal risks in a business context.
Ability to handle and strategically prioritize numerous projects in a fast-paced business environment.
Ability to establish strong professional relationships and credibility with internal clients, management, and legal colleagues.
Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Ability to work independently under direction of the Deputy General Counsel.

The E.W. Scripps Company is seeking an Employment Attorney. This person is responsible for providing practical and strategic legal counsel to HR professionals on employment law-related matters, including compliance with federal, state and local employment laws, to ensure the company's activities, policies, business practices, and transactions comply with all relevant laws and regulations. This position reports to the Deputy General Counsel. This is a hybrid position that can be located in Atlanta, GA or Cincinnati, OH.
