      Our Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Program is a two- to four-year rotation-based program that allows new engineers to develop their skills in three core groups over 6 to 12 month terms. EITs will work in each of FortisAlberta’s three core engineering groups:

      Customer Planning, learning CymeDist, load flow, motor starts, and customer systems;

      Protection & Control, learning protection assessments, metering, and other P&C projects; and

      Capital Delivery, learning detailed line design calculations, process improvements, technical approvals, and project management.

      Additionally, EITs can rotate through other engineering specialties according to their interests and business needs. These groups include Standards & Projects Engineering, System Planning, Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Planning, Metering & Telecommunications, Power Quality, Asset Management, SCADA (with exposure to Control Centre Operations), and Regulatory Engineering.

      In addition to honing their engineering skills under the mentorship of Senior Engineers and achieving Professional Engineer (P.Eng) status, FortisAlberta’s EITs will develop their skills in project management, leadership, research and innovation, and stakeholder engagement.

      What Are We Looking For?

      FortisAlberta is looking for an Engineer in Training who, under the direction of the Manager Engineering/Senior Engineer, will gain skills and experience through training and development, coaching and mentoring while supporting the Engineering team on various assignments.

      The Engineer in Training will develop technical and non-technical skills through the completion of assignments. This role will investigate and troubleshoot problems and recommendations. In this role you will update and maintain documentation, standards and guidelines. The Engineer in Training will prepare technical documents based on required specifications.

      The Engineer in Training will identify areas for process improvements and assist with implementation. This role will build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders by providing customer service. In this role you will research and gain an understanding in the industry standards and practices, while providing peer reviews as required. Additionally, any special projects and other duties as assigned.

      What will you bring to the Role?

      • Demonstrated ability to resolve issues by analyzing and evaluating possible solutions.
      • Strong customer service focus with the proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
      • Strong written or verbal communication skills.
      • Proven ability to work in a team environment or independently with minimal supervision.
      • Ability to interpret technical documents.
      • Demonstrated ability in technical writing.
      • Demonstrated intermediate ability in using MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
      • Knowledge of electrical utility industry.

      Qualifications we are Looking for:

      • A Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral Engineering Degree in Electrical, Computer, or another related engineering field
      • Must be registered or eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training with APEGA.
      • Experience with power flow software (CYME), GIS systems, MS Office, power line design software, coding (Python, Excel VBA), SAP, CRM or other related programs would be an asset.
