      Entry level opportunities include:

      ARRANGEMENTS

      • In essence responsible the location of all equipment on the submarine from as small as an electrical outlet to as large as a turbine-generator.
      • Locates equipment, on board repair parts (stowages and lockers), location of lighting fixtures, and creates equipment removal and flow paths.
      • Become space manager for all components to assure the location of equipment will meet all technical, operational, maintainability, sustainability, meeting human engineering design and safety requirements. .
      • Develop future submarines design concepts, support all design disciplines and engineering through use of electronic models to reflect latest design system diagrams, and updates the submarine as new technology emerges.

      STRUCTURAL

      • In essence responsible for all submarine structures.
      • Create structural design products for pressure hull plating, frames, decks, tanks, bulkheads, superstructure, rudders, diving planes, foundations, lockers, and stowages.
      • Drawings (disclosures) are utilized by shipfitters and sheetmetal trade workers to produce their work.

      MECHANICAL

      • In essence responsible for all submarine large mechanical components.
      • Create mechanical design products for torpedo tubes, weapons shipping and handling equipment, hatches, missile tubes, steering and diving equipment, and other components.
      • Drawings (disclosures) are utilized by machinist trade workers to produce their work.

      PIPING

      • In essence responsible for all submarine piping products.
      • Create piping design products for piping and piping hangers for various systems (i.e. high pressure air, air condition, sanitation, refrigeration, and other instrumentation and control).
      • Produce the Submarine Class fluid diagrams
      • Drawings (disclosures) are utilized by pipefitter and pipe hanger trade workers to produce their work

      ELECTRICAL

      • In essence responsible for all submarine electrical products.
      • Create electrical design products for electrical system, cableway, and components design. (i.e. internal communication, lighting systems, radar, sonar, and other instrumentation and control).
      • Produce the Submarine Class wiring tables, wiring diagrams and wiring schematics.
      • Drawings (disclosures) are utilized by electrical trade workers to produce their work

      This job requires the completion and graduation from the Eastern Workforce Investment Board (EWIB) Design Pipeline Program, pre-employment. The program is currently offered by Three Rivers Community College. This intensive, work-based classroom training program is 6 weeks long. The classes are 6-1/2 hours per day, 5 days per week. The program is currently run second shift from 3:00pm-9:30pm.

      Qualifications

      Required:

      • High school diploma/GED or Vocational High School diploma
      • Less than two years of relevant work experience
      • Successful competion of the Eastern CT Workforce Investment Board Manufacturing Pipeline Initiative Training Program (EWIB)

      Preferred

      • Demonstrated proficiency in drafting (portfolio) with Computer Aided Design (CAD) (NX preferred)
      • Knowledge of Microsoft products
      • Ability to perform design related math functions
      • Ability to read and interpret written instructions and drawings (blueprints)

      Skills

      • Structural aptitude
      • Knowledge of Microsoft products
      • Familiarity with design practices/rules and CAD tools (NX preferred)
      • Ability to perform design related math functions
      • Ability to read and interpret written instructions and drawings (blueprints)
      • Desire to develop skills through on-the-job experience and continued education to advance in the design profession
      • Familiarity with design standards, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), military specifications, manufacturing processes and lean design/manufacturing
