By working closely with the US government and coordinating grassroots advocacy efforts, our Corporate and Government Affairs team represents United on public policy and legislative issues.       Key Responsibilities:

      The Environmental Sustainability Manager will report into United's Decarbonization team, sitting in the Environmental Affairs organization. This position will support United's long-term sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) strategy, including longer-term net zero transition efforts. The Manager is responsible for tracking against climate targets, broad SAF policy readiness and compliance, and assessing the broader energy and SAF market. This position will also lead United's view on the broad SAF market scale, developing and tracking specific metrics and KPIs. The Manager will support United's decarbonization technology investment portfolio and perform some technical and environmental diligence for potential investments. Support other duties as assigned.

      • Maintain key SAF metrics and tracking - Ability to assess and track a fast-emerging SAF market and distill market trends for United's SAF strategy. Determine macro trends to track and forecast, but also internal SAF tracking. Assess constantly evolving SAF economics with key considerations for our net zero transition strategy
      • Support United's longer-term SAF strategy - Work across immediate Decarbonization team, but also with broad set of internal collaborators, to support development and implementation of SAF strategy
      • SAF policy engagement - Develop strategy and readiness for our exposure to growing SAF policy landscape, inclusive of international policy requirements. Understand differing policy mechanisms, obligations, and opportunities to incent broader SAF adoption.
      • Professional development and team engagement - Establish individual goals that align with United's climate ambition: net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Develop individual career development and training plans with management.
      • Use technical knowledge and experience to provide thoughtful decision-making and guidance in strategic implementation of our climate strategy and program.
      • Be solution-oriented and committed to crafting and sustaining a culture of continual improvement and innovation. Model integrity, possess self-awareness, and cultivate an environment of accountability

      What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

      • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Environmental Science/Engineering/Policy or similar
      • Comparable environmental sustainability work experience with general understanding of climate policy
      • Minimum 5 years of environmental sustainability experience in renewable fuels, energy transition, aviation sustainability, or fuels policy work
      • Strong business and financial competence to evaluate strategies and opportunities relevant to our business
      • Knowledge of energy markets, emerging climate technologies and the role of clean energies in the transition toward climate goals
      • Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills
      • Demonstrates strong interpersonal, management presence and judgment skills to employ thought leadership across a group of collaborators
      • Proficient digital literacy including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
      • Ability to travel domestically 25% of the time and internationally 10% of the time
      • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
      • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

      What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):

      • Master's degree or equivalent experience in Environmental Science/Engineering/Policy or similar
      • 3-5 years project management or environmental consulting experience, with experience leading project teams
      • Experience developing clean energy strategies
      • Knowledge of energy financial metrics and macro renewable fuels trends
      • Experience in the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry or aviation energy supply chain
      • Experience collaborating among teams and leading projects involving multiple groups and individuals of differing backgrounds and perspectives

      The salary for this position is $91,800 to $134,640, dependent on job-related, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, education and skills. This range is based on a full-time schedule.
