      Req#: R8483

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

It’s not every job where you make a difference for the people of Scotland. But it’s what’s behind every job here. Our work keeps Scotland’s water flowing, from reservoir to tap – and from sewer to treatment plant.

Want to join us? Join our Income Accounting team as a Sundry Billing Advisor on a full-time, permanent basis in Inverness. If you have a financial background and excellent customer service experience, along with a curious and open mindset eager to make improvements, we want to hear from you!

      What You’ll Do

In this dynamic position, you'll be taking on a variety of responsibilities. You'll manage our customer helpline and team mailbox, ensuring queries are addressed promptly.

Preparing and issuing invoices to customers within strict monthly deadlines will be a key part of your role, as will investigating customer disputes. This means working closely with teams across Scottish Water to find resolutions. You'll also handle billing reconciliations, respond to customer queries by phone or email, and support our debt and cash management processes, including processing cash book payments and liaising with debt recovery agents.

On top of that, you'll play a role in reviewing, streamlining, and standardising processes and procedures to ensure compliance with Scottish Water policies and controls. General administrative duties like managing daily mail and logging cheques will also fall under your remit.

      What You’ll Bring

We're looking for someone with solid customer service experience and strong verbal and written communication skills. You should be a good problem solver with analytical skills to spot and deliver improvements.

Being a strong team player who collaborates well with others to achieve common goals is essential, as is the ability to plan and prioritise your work while staying flexible with changing priorities. Numeracy skills, excellent organisational abilities, and attention to detail are crucial.

You should be proficient in Microsoft Excel and standard IT packages and be open to learning new systems. Importantly, you should be willing to ask questions and challenge the status quo to find better ways of doing things.

Beyond that, we’re looking for a few ‘nice-to-haves’. You will be someone who can listen, empathise, and assist customers effectively, resolving issues and mitigating potential reputational impacts. Confidence, a personable nature, and excellent communication, organisational, and customer service skills are key.

You should be capable of managing customer situations, working well within a team, and have proficient IT skills. Familiarity with Scottish Water processes and systems is a plus.

This role is based in our Inverness office, but we're open to considering other locations around Scotland for the right candidate.

      Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy up to five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.

For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), and life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

      The not-so-small print

This role will be a Grade 3. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £25,980. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £30,000.

If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - the closing date for applications is midnight on the 28th of June 2024.

Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, licence checks, etc. These checks are conducted on our behalf by a third party. Don’t worry - we’ll ask your permission before starting these checks.

A few final things worth knowing…

Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!

Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.

As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.

Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
