      The Fire Inspector reports to the Fire Marshal and carries out their work under the direction of the Fire Marshal. This is responsible, technical and administrative work assisting the Fire Prevention Bureau in a variety of activities that include: conducting inspections, fire investigations providing public information, and conducting other related fire prevention activities. This is a safety sensitive position.

      The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate. The City of Westminster has a Multilingual Stipend Program to encourage and reward benefited employees who are conversationally fluent in languages other than English. Benefited employees have the opportunity to test their language proficiency skills and qualify for a bi-weekly stipend that will vary based on the employee’s level of proficiency and usage.

      This position promotes the mission and values of the City of Westminster by supporting the goals of the Fire Department, which is responsible for providing timely emergency response to fire and emergency medical calls; ensuring the safety of personnel, citizens, and visitors to the community; and educating residents and business owners on fire safety, emergency medical prevention and emergency preparedness.

        • Fire prevention and suppression techniques, equipment, hydraulics, public fire and burn safety education, hazardous materials and response procedures, and knowledge of appropriate City and Department operating procedures

      Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks
      1. Conduct
      • Technical inspections, which include fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm and detection systems, commercial hood fire extinguishing systems, above ground/underground storage tank installation and removal, and special hazard processes
      • General business inspections, assisting line crews with problem fire life safety systems and following up on citizen complaints; conducts water flow testing from fire hydrants and records results
      2. Maintain applicable Fire Department records and files appropriate reports in the required timeframes
      3. Issue and approve permits as required by the Fire Department
      4. Research and analyze applicable codes and standards and make decisions based on the interpretation of those codes and standards for citizens, contractors, developers, City staff and Fire Department personnel
      5. Assist with:
      • GIS, pre-plan and building risk analysis updating by gathering information and/or performing computer data entry
      • Fire Department training as it relates to the Fire Prevention Bureau activities and functions
      • Involvement in such committees as pre-application, Fire Marshals Association of Colorado, etc., as directed by the Fire Marshal
      6. Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a safe driving record as driving is essential for this position
      7. Maintain regular and punctual attendance
      Other Duties and Responsibilities
      1. Participate in assigned department functions as required by members of the Administrative team
      Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion.

      Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications

      Required :

      • Graduation from high school or GED
      • ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 is required within 1 year of employment
      • State of Colorado Driver Operator Utility is required within one (1) year of employment
      • International Fire Code Fire Inspector I certification
      • Two (2) years of experience conducting fire inspections/fire code experience
      • Possession of a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record
      • The following is required within one (1) year of appointment into this position:
        • Fire Suppression System Inspector Certification and Hood Inspector Certification
        • International Fire Code Fire Inspector II

        Preferred :

        • CDFPC or equivalent FF I or FF II
        • Fire Investigation experience or IAAI IFIT or CFEI Fire Investigation Certification
        • HazMat Awareness/Operations

        Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.

        Physical Requirements:

        This position is physical in nature, requires a high level of fitness and involves:

        • Constant standing and walking on uneven terrain in various conditions to perform job functions; occasional squatting, bending and kneeling to perform functions at various sites
        • Frequent sitting to write reports and drive to and from locations
        • Frequent light grasp, hand manipulation and handling needed to use equipment; occasional firm grasp is needed to manipulate tools and training aids
        • Frequent stepping up/down to get in and out of vehicles; and frequently actuate mechanisms needed to safely operate vehicles and equipment
        • Frequent use of far acuity to detect hazards; constant use of near acuity to write reports and perform office tasks
        • Frequent lifting, carrying, push/pulling of up to twenty (20) pounds to move material and supplies; occasional lifting, pushing/pulling of up to fifty (50) pounds with dollies and carts
        • Frequent squatting, reaching above shoulder and twisting to file documents and lift supplies and material; occasional bending, kneeling, climbing, balancing and reaching below shoulder to store documents, material and supplies

        WORKING CONDITIONS

        Must be able to perform tasks requiring exertion while being exposed to conditions such as heat, cold, cramped and/or hazardous surroundings. This work is performed in all weather conditions, including catastrophic conditions such as high wind, tornadoes, blizzards, flooding, hail, etc., and in extreme weather conditions with temperatures below 32 degrees for extended periods and in temperatures in excess of 100 degrees for extended periods of time. The potential to work in hazardous surroundings exists at all times which includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical equipment, electrical currents, working on ladders or in high places, and exposure to hazardous materials. Extreme atmospheric conditions may exist which can affect the respiratory system or skin. This includes exposure to gases, chemicals, fumes, mists, dusts, radiation and/or poor ventilation. May be exposed to high noise levels and is often required to wear hearing protection. This work requires varying degrees of physical responses from sedentary work to heavy work due to the nature of unpredictable and unforeseeable events that characterize the fire service. A wide variety of physical activities are inherent to this position at any given time.

        Required Materials and Equipment

        General office equipment including personal computers, telephone, copy machine, and calculator. Must be able to operate vehicles and equipment related to the position. Must be able to read gauges and meters in a variety of styles and uses. Must be able to read construction blueprints and fire protection plans and use an architect and engineer's scale (ruler).
