- Successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) with a licensed CPAT agency is NOT required to apply or test. Passing the CPAT will be required within 6 months of the first day of Intern Orientation for each Academy. For the January 2025 Academy, the first day of Intern Orientation is anticipated to be September 14, 2024. Candidates who pass the Written Exam but have not completed their CPAT due to financial hardship may apply for a voucher for MFMD to cover the cost of CPAT testing at an NTN facility before the Intern Orientation. Information regarding application for financial assistance vouchers will be provided to candidates by Tuesday, September 3, 2024. CPAT documentation will not be accepted until the first day of Intern Orientation. The CPAT licensee must verify the CPAT result. - State of Arizona EMT or Paramedic certification is not required to apply or test but will be required before the start date of the Academy and must be kept current thereafter. Successful Firefighter Recruit candidates who are unable to obtain their EMT certification by the start date of the Academy may be offered a Fire Pre-Recruit position where they must complete an MFMD-sponsored EMT course (if they are not already enrolled in their own outside EMT course*) as soon as possible upon hire and will be given three (3) attempts to pass the EMT certification test within 45 days following completion of the course and before the Academy immediately following completion of the EMT course. Upon successful performance as a Pre-Recruit and passing the EMT certification within the specified time period, Pre-Recruits will promote to the Firefighter Recruit position in the following MFMD Firefighter Recruit Academy. UPDATE 12/12/24: All job offers for the January 2025 Academy have been extended to selected candidates. The January 2025 Academy is the final Academy being filled from the current list, and a new recruitment for Mesa’s Firefighter Recruit will open in February 2025 to begin a testing/selection process for the August 2025 Academy. Candidates who did not receive a job offer for the January 2025 Academy are encouraged to reapply in February for the new recruitment process.Specific recruitment opening dates and other information will be posted on MFMD social media and the website Firefighter Recruitment - City of Mesa in early 2025.
A change to the upcoming testing process will be a valid CPAT is required to be attached to the application. In addition, applications will be capped at the first 500 candidates with a valid CPAT. This Firefighter - Recruit January 2025 Academy Information Posting will remain posted online throughout the selection process for the January 2025 Academy. The exact dates and numbers for the January 2025 Academy have not been finalized, but MFMD anticipates hiring approximately 30 candidates from this list. The testing and selection process will be different than previous years, so please pay careful attention to all information and instructions listed below.
An EMT Certification was recommended but not required to apply, and MFMD is pleased to offer successful Firefighter Recruit candidates new opportunities to be selected to join the Department as Fire Pre-Recruits if they have not yet completed their EMT certification. Pre-Recruits hired without EMT certifications will attend an MFMD-sponsored EMT course (if they are not already enrolled in their own outside EMT course) and have up to three (3) opportunities within 45 days following the completion of the course (and before the Academy immediately following completion of the EMT course) to pass the EMT certification test. Upon successful performance as a Pre-Recruit and passing the EMT certification within the specified time period, Pre-Recruits will promote to the Firefighter Recruit position in the following MFMD Firefighter Recruit Academy. Firefighter - Recruit is the entry class, as Mesa Fire and Medical Department does not accept lateral transfers of Firefighters from other Departments.
For the January 2025 Academy for Firefighter Recruit testing process, the City of Mesa's Written Exam was offered through National Testing Network (NTN) during the testing window of August 15, 2024 through August 26, 2024. There were multiple testing options offered, including taking the test at one of NTN's nationwide testing centers as well as a virtual option to take the test at your own private location. Candidates who tested previously with NTN and had current valid FireTEAM and/or Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) Part 1 test scores (PSSA Part 2 was not required for Mesa's testing process) were eligible to submit their existing valid FireTEAM/PSSA Part 1 test scores for Mesa's Firefighter Recruit testing process without having to test again. NTN test scores are valid for up to one year. For all applicants invited to test during Mesa's recruitment process, Mesa either paid for the exam for those who scheduled a new exam, OR covered the score transfer fee for those with valid existing scores with NTN.
The Written Exam (FireTEAM and PSSA Part 1) was scored by NTN. While general performance feedback may have been provided by NTN at the completion of your tests, you will not receive your scores directly from NTN. **Reminders for CPAT Deadline**: If you do not already have a passing Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) score, you are encouraged to complete the test as soon as possible. Passing the CPAT will be required within 6 months of the first day of Intern Orientation for each Academy. For the January 2025 Academy, the first day of Intern Orientation is anticipated to be September 14, 2024, so valid CPATs dated between 3/14/24-9/14/24 will be accepted. UPDATE 11/6/24: Selection Interviews were completed on October 23, 2024. The Selection Interview is the last phase of the January 2025 Academy testing process. Mesa Fire and Medical Department expects to complete reference checking and extend conditional job offers by mid-November for the January 2025 Academy. All candidates not receiving a conditional job offer will receive a status email by late November with information about applying for the next recruitment process in February 2025 for the August 2025 Academy.
UPDATE 10/3/24: Intern Orientation was completed on September 29, 2024. The most qualified candidates who completed the Intern Orientation will be invited by email to register for Selection Interviews by 10/4/24 at 6:00 p.m. The Selection Interview is the last phase of the January 2025 Academy testing process. Candidates who completed the Intern Orientation but are not advancing to the Selection Interviews will also receive a status email by 10/4/24 at 6:00 p.m. with information about applying for the next recruitment process in February 2025 for the August 2025 Academy.

All applicants who participated in the Written Exam testing process with National Testing Network (NTN) were notified via email on 9/3/24 if they completed and passed or failed the exam, as well as their status in the recruitment process. ONLY THE MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATES RANKED FROM EXAM PERFORMANCE RECEIVED A SEPARATE EMAIL ON SEPTEMBER 3RD INVITING THEM TO REGISTER FOR THE INTERN ORIENTATION. If you did not receive an email inviting you to register for the Intern Orientation, this means that you will not be moving forward in the recruitment process at this time. We encourage you to reapply for the next recruitment process in February 2025 for the August 2025 Academy. Specific recruitment opening dates and other information will be posted on MFMD social media and the MFMD Firefighter Recruitment Page in early 2025. The City of Mesa and NTN are NOT able to provide scores or feedback about individual exam performance. Candidates who failed to complete BOTH of the NTN exams (FireTEAM and PSSA Part 1) or transfer BOTH of those exam scores during the testing window of 8/15-8/26 are NOT eligible to continue in the recruitment process.
UPDATE 8/15/24: All applicants who met the Minimum Qualifications for the position of Firefighter - Recruit with the City of Mesa were emailed by the City of Human Resources Department on August 15, 2024 with detailed instructions on how to register for the Written Exam phase of the testing process through National Testing Network (NTN). All qualified applicants should have also received a second email on August 15, 2024 directly from NTN ( donotreply@nationaltestingnetwork.com ) with the instructions and link to complete the required MFMD registration for testing or transfer of scores within the testing window. Application and Status Reminders:
While enrolled in the Mesa Firefighter-Recruit Training Academy, employees are assigned to work 8-hour or 10-hour shifts and 40-hour work weeks, and receive close supervision from a Fire Captain assigned as the Fire Training Officer who reviews and evaluates work in progress and upon completion to ensure conformance to standard operating procedures. Upon successful completion of the academy, Firefighter-Recruits are promoted to the Firefighter classification and begin serving their regular probation period as a City of Mesa Firefighter. Incumbents are then required to work 12-hour or 24-hour shift schedules, although they may be assigned to work 8-hour or 10-hour shifts and 40-hour work weeks while assisting on special projects. New Firefighters receive close supervision from a Fire Captain who reviews and evaluates their work in progress. This class is FLSA nonexempt and has been designated as a non-classified, non-merit system, at-will position.
Firefighter - Recruits learn to perform emergency medical treatment and to ventilate burning buildings by opening windows and holes in roofs and floors, position and climb ladders to gain access to the upper levels of buildings, assist in advancing hose lines and making connections to hydrants, direct streams of water on fires, and perform search and rescue operations inside burning buildings, while wearing personal protective equipment weighing approximately 70 pounds that significantly impairs body cooling, in high humidity (up to 100 percent) situations, relying on self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for ventilation, and in environments with extreme temperature fluctuations (400+ degrees Fahrenheit). **As noted above, successful Firefighter - Recruit candidates who do not receive a job offer for a Firefighter - Recruit position in the January 2025 Academy filled from the list, or who do not yet possess an EMT certification (which is required before confirmation of hire as a Firefighter - Recruit), may be offered a position as a Fire Pre-Recruit. Fire Pre-Recruit is a pre-Fire Training Academy training class used to employ, educate, train, and evaluate prospective Firefighter Recruits. Upon successful performance in this class (including passing the EMT testing certification within the specified period of time/attempts if certification is not already possessed), Fire Pre-Recruits will be promoted to the Firefighter - Recruit classification in the following Academy.**

Minimum Qualifications Required.Special Requirements. Must possess a valid Arizona Class D Driver's License by hire or promotion date and must have an acceptable driving record. Substance Abuse Testing. Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.
Preferred/Desirable Qualifications. Successful completion of Fire Science coursework from a regionally accredited college or university and previous firefighting experience (full-time, part-time, or volunteer) is preferred. Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.
