- Classify and interpret human genetic/genomic variants in accordance with company SOPs
- Perform gene-disease association curation according with company protocols
- Provide technical and scientific support to VSG and other teams regarding variant assessment and gene curation
- Mentor and develop clinical genomics scientists
- Implement and refine quality and throughput indices for team and individual improvements
- Ensure operational excellence managing day to day operations for case assignments, tracking variants for classification, turnaround time, and capacity
- Troubleshoot NGS pipeline variant annotations as required
- Communicate frequently with the Laboratory Directors, Medical Geneticists and Genetic Counselors regarding variant assessment
- Participate in projects to update variant classification, gene-disease association curation, onboarding training, and on-going training
- Establish and foster positive team dynamics and communication patterns
- Interact with the software vendors/IT/bioinformatics group(s) regarding technology needs as and when required
- Opportunity to take part in company projects, publications and posters at scientific meetings of relevance to the organization
- PhD in Life Sciences (Genetics / Molecular Biology /Biochemistry /Experimental Pathology) or Master’s in Genetic Counseling with a strong background in Human Genetics and WES/NGS technologies
- Minimum 8 years of experience in classifying variants based on ACMG guidelines in a clinical setting required
- Previous leadership experience preferred
- Significant experience and expertise in genomics and molecular diagnostics
- Strong analytical capabilities, scientific writing and communication skills, organization, and the ability to critically review, comprehend, ascertain and document relevant clinical and functional data from scientific publications and online databases
- Ability to use bioinformatics software and Microsoft Office suite of products (specifically use of Microsoft Excel to mine, parse and automate analysis of datasets)
- Proficiency with large NGS datasets, in-silico tools, HGVS nomenclature, and genome browsers.
- Ability to meet production timelines with a sense of urgency and ethical responsibility in a rapidly evolving dynamic setting
The Women’s Health and Genetics division of LabCorp is seeking a Senior Variant Scientist to join our Variant Science Group (VSG) team. Variant Science is a very important component of our overall strategy and growth in genomics. The Senior Variant Scientist is responsible for classification of inherited and somatic sequence variants identified through Targeted NGS DNA sequencing and WES case triage review in a high throughput clinical laboratory setting. The Senior variant scientist performs gene-disease association curation according to established protocols. Troubleshoots production pipeline issues with a broad understanding of related bioinformatics touchpoints and trains other scientists at the supervisor's discretion. The Senior variant Scientist, in alignment with the management vision, will oversee the operation and development projects as we expand and support our genomics assay services. A strong background in Human Genetics as well as familiarity with human mutation databases is essential.
Please note: this position has the option to be 100% remote, or physically located at our laboratory in Westborough, MA or RTP, NC. The schedule for this position will be Monday - Friday, 8am-5pm local time zone.
