      Employment Type: Full Time – Permanent

      Salary Range: SP3, Level 5, $91,200 - $114,000 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

      Geologist, Regulatory Applications – Hybrid

      The Opportunity

      The Regulatory Applications branch is looking for an experienced Geologist to join the Geology and Hydrogeology Team with the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). In this role you will provide technical knowledge in the review of applications pertaining to the geological components of oil and gas activity. This includes new regulatory areas such as Carbon Capture and Storage, Geothermal and Brine Hosted Minerals development.

      As a Geologist, you will collaborate with other technical professionals to review proposals, liaise with applicants, clearly articulate the risks associated with applications, and make recommendations. Your primary focus falls within the Oil and Gas Conservation Rules (OGCR), Directive 065 (Resources Applications), Directive 080 (well logging) and Directive 20 (well abandonment). This is a unique opportunity to work surface to basement stratigraphy and all conventional (not Insitu or Mining) areas of the province.

      What your day-to-day will look like:

      • Draws upon geological and regulatory knowledge to review and make recommendations, which includes developing approval conditions, on the geological aspects of submitted applications. Apply risk based technical review principals to ensure projects are compliant with AER rules and regulations. Work within timeline constraints.

      • Review time sensitive non-routine abandonment plans and provide geological guidance following Directive 20 requirements.

      • Geological data gathering and report writing for H2S release rate calculations.

      • Initiate and liaise with representatives from industry, Alberta Geological Survey and government during the application review process including but not limited to communicating regulatory requirements associated with oil and gas developments.

      • Take an active role in project work by providing technical guidance and input, champion the implementation into our core business functions and collaborate with stakeholders (internal and external) as necessary.

      • Share workload, knowledge, and learnings in a collaborative way with the team. Participate in Community of Practice meetings.

      What we’re looking for in you:

      • Bachelor of Science in Geology or Earth Science, with 5-7 years of progressive and related experience.

      • Membership or eligibility for registration as a Professional Geoscientist with Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) is required.

      • Attention to detail with respect to log analysis, interpretation, and stratigraphic correlations.

      • Experience with ArcGIS considered an asset

      • Team player, clear communication, critical thinker, strong time management skills, shows initiative, positive attitude
