      Geoscientist, Geothermal Resources – Hybrid

      The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator's (AER's) mandate has expanded to include new areas of resource development, including geothermal. This expansion is part of the Alberta government's economic recovery plan to diversify the economy and accelerate growth in new and emerging sectors. As the Geoscientist, Geothermal Resources, you will join the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) branch’s Emerging Resources team, which is a technically and culturally diverse group of geoscience professionals engaged in mineral and geothermal resource evaluation. The team is split across Edmonton and Calgary and enjoys a very flexible mix of remote and in-person working styles.

You will apply broad functional knowledge and skills in the fields of geomechanics, engineering, hydrogeology and/or geology to support AGS/AER efforts to characterize geothermal resources along with other subsurface resource development projects involving production/injection operations, waste disposal, geological storage, and induced seismicity in the Alberta Basin and underlying basement. You will require significant knowledge of all types of geothermal systems and methods of characterization to propose and lead projects, contribute to knowledge-sharing within the team, and provide support for regulatory decision making related to geothermal and related resources. You will integrate different data types from varied sources in a digital workspace to generate geoscience products to support subsurface characterization and will be familiar with data manipulation, visualization, mapping and geoscience modelling techniques.

What your day-to-day will look like:

      • Support the development and delivery of projects designed to characterize geothermal resources along with other subsurface resource development projects involving production/injection operations for hydrocarbon recovery, waste disposal, and CO2 geological storage. This will involve collection, quality control, integration, interpretation, and publication of diverse geomechanical, engineering, hydrogeological, geological and/or geophysical datasets, and collaboration with internal staff and external stakeholders. Develop reports, maps, journal articles, and conference presentations for public consumption.

      • Identify gaps, resemblances, subsurface risk, and potential interference between geothermal resource utilization and other existing or anticipated offsetting subsurface resource development activities related to hydrocarbon extraction, waste disposal and/or CO2 geological storage activities. Likewise, supporting the study of induced seismicity in the Alberta Basin and underlying basement will be an important responsibility.

      • Maintain current state of knowledge and awareness of geothermal industry activity and related geoscience research and communicate relevant information to AGS Leadership Team in addition to providing seminars/working sessions with other branches, or with external stakeholder groups.

      • Actively manage data acquired or produced during AGS project work. Ensures data and information is stored and described according to best-practice standards to ensure discoverability and re-use after project is complete.

      • Provide support for regulatory activities related to geothermal resources.

What we’re looking for in you:

      • Bachelor’s degree in a geoscience, geoscience-related or engineering discipline with preference for advanced degrees.

      • 5-7 years of relevant experience or a combination of education and experience will be considered.

      • Eligibility for APEGA membership is required.

      • Extensive experience in collecting, analyzing, and validating multi-source geoscience data is required. Able to utilize various software tools for data integration, statistical or numerical modeling of rock and fluid properties, geological mapping, and 3D data visualization.

      • Proficiency in ESRI ArcPro or ArcMap is required. Experience using geological interpretation software such as Petrel, Petra, and/or Kingdom to analyze data and to create regional models of aquifers/reservoirs is preferred.

      • Strong written and oral communication skills are required to portray complex geoscience concepts, practices, approaches, and results to stakeholders.

      • Familiarity and competency in the geomechanical, engineering, geophysical, and/or hydrogeological methods foundational to the characterization of geothermal resources in Alberta is required, as is a general knowledge of Alberta’s geology.

      • Understanding of geothermal energy systems and geothermal energy extraction methods is required.

      • Knowledge and experience in heat transfer physics is required. Knowledge and experience in fluid-rock interaction and multi-phase flow phenomena are considered an asset.

      • Knowledge of programing languages, data science and geospatial applications, utilising libraries / packages, with familiarity in web mapping and interactive visualisation engines is preferred.

      Additional Information:

      • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

      • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.

      • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email PeopleServices@aer.ca. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.

      What we offer you:

      • Great benefits from your first day of work

      • Flexible Work Program - hybrid work and flexible hours

      • Defined benefit pension plan(s)

      • Flexible benefits program options, including Personal & Health spending account(s)

      • Generous vacation entitlement and flex days
