      Job summary

      The GP Assistant will report to the Practice Manager and GPs, and will support the GPs to ensure the efficient provision of medical services and clinics, by performing several more routine administrative and clinical duties. This will allow the GPs to utilise their own time more effectively towards greater patient focused activities.

      This post is for up to 30 hours per week. Applications via CV will also be welcomed.

      Main duties of the job

      We are looking for a GP Assistant who will support both clinical and administrative teams in the delivery of services, working as part of the Practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of Practice to the entitled patient population.

      Utilising the NHS Health Education England GPA Competency Framework, the post holder working within General Practice will capabilities within care, administration, clinical, communications and health records management.

      About us

      We are a premises-owning, five Partner, training practice with a growing list size, currently around 15,000. We have three Salaried GPs, a Clinical Pharmacist, two Advanced Care Practitioners, two Nurse Practitioners, three Practice Nurses, one Nursing Associate and two Healthcare Assistants, and a strong close-knit administrative team providing clinical support.

      As well as the Practice staff, patients can also access additional roles including Social Prescribers, Adult and Child Mental Health Workers, Physicians Associate and First Contact Practitioners through BYTES Primary Care Network.

      We have a strong reputation as a teaching and training Practice. We share our passion for Primary Care through providing placements for sixth form students, teaching all years of medical/nursing students, allied health professionals and GP Registrars. Each week we provide "clinical huddle" as well as "lunch and learn" for all staff, where we have covered topic areas such as menopause, dementia awareness and self-defense.

      We are strongly embedded in our local community. Over the last few years, we have participated in Yarm Fun Run, organised and held community public health awareness days (for cancers and CPR training), and held Open Days for school students interested in a medical career.

      Job description

      Job responsibilities

      The following are the core responsibilities of the GP Assistant/Medical Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.

      a. Undertaking new patient health checks

      b. Providing support to GPs by taking patient history and baseline observations prior to the patient seeing the GP

      c. Carrying out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording all findings accurately

      d. Facilitating routine and 24 hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly

      e. Carrying out BMI checks as directed

      f. Acting as a chaperone as required

      g. When trained, undertaking venepuncture

      h. Conducting ECGs as requested

      i. Signposting some received correspondence to others, e.g., Clinical Pharmacist, Practice Nurse

      j. Extracting all the required information from clinical letters, applying medical codes as required and adding these to patient notes

      k. Supporting practice patients by arranging appointments, onward referrals, clinical tests and follow up appointments.

      l. Completing basic (non-opinion) forms in addition to some elements of forms for the GP(s) to approve, such as insurance forms, mortgage applications, Department for Work and Pensions benefits forms and others as appropriate

      m. Explaining treatment procedures to patients

      n. Supporting GP(s) in liaising with external agencies such as helping to arrange patient admission while the GP(s) continue with the consultation.

      o. Supporting the GP(s) with wound care and immunisations (including flu vaccinations)

      p. Undertaking all mandatory training and induction programmes

      q. Attending a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed

      r. Contributing to public health campaigns (e.g., flu clinics) through advice or direct care, including opportunistic health promotional programmes
