      Job Description

      The NREL mission is to develop renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and practices, advance related science and engineering, and transfer knowledge and innovation to address the nation’s energy security, energy resilience, energy justice and environmental goals.

      NREL’s Strategic Energy Analysis Center is seeking an experienced and dynamic leader to provide technical vision, leadership, and direction for the Markets Analysis Group. This new group is on the forefront of NREL’s research and analysis efforts in areas including, but not limited to market characterizations, improvement opportunities, alternative designs, transferable lessons, increased market transparency, and leverage points for policies and programs to accelerate transformation.

      The Markets Analysis group advances the state-of-the-art and public access for credible information and key insights on energy markets to inform market transformation and critical decisions. The Markets Analysis group’s distinctive products leverage NREL’s technology data, domain expertise, strategic vision for energy transformation, and roles in convening and developing internationally recognized thought leadership.

      Note that the management portion of this position is 40% of the individual’s time and the remaining 60% is anticipated to be on technical work including project management, technical activities, and client interaction. These activities should have alignment with staff under management and will require a deep technical basis in relevant disciplines.

      Primary responsibilities include:

      • Providing the vision to lead a research agenda and adapt the group’s technical strengths to the emerging opportunities in markets analysis
      • Managing a diverse team of technical professionals to ensure the highest quality work products and a dynamic and intellectually stimulating work environment
      • Engaging with research, academic and industry partners to advance the state of the art in this discipline
      • Leading responses to funding opportunities from DOE and other sources, including identification of opportunities and contributions to successful proposals
      • Overseeing group planning and budgeting to ensure fiscal responsibility
      • Building new competencies to support portfolio growth and impact
      • Managing staff including hiring, coaching, advising, motivating, and evaluating performance
      • Creating a supportive work environment that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship, effectively enabling staff to reach their full potential
      • Understanding and ensuring equal employment opportunities, affirmative action, sexual harassment programs, safety protocols and other policies and procedures are understood and followed within their team/center
      • Ensuring staff members understand and are compliant with policies and procedures

      Basic Qualifications

      This role can be hired at a Group Manager II or a Group Manager III level.

      Group Manager II
      Bachelor’s Degree and 9 years experience in technically related research discipline; Or, Master’s Degree and 7 years experience in technically related research discipline; Or, PhD and 4 years experience in technically related research discipline.

      Group Manager III
      Bachelor’s Degree and 14 years experience in technically related research discipline; Or, Master’s Degree and 12 years experience in technically related research discipline; Or, PhD and 9 years experience in related technical research discipline.

      * Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

      Additional Required Qualifications

      • Demonstrated skill in dealing with legal and ethical management issues and practices.
      • Broad and in-depth knowledge of the issues and best practices in the applicable field of expertise.
      • Excellent organization, project management, budgeting, interpersonal and communication skills.
      • Proven problem-solving and negotiation skills.
      • Ability to collaborate with individuals at all levels of the organization.
      • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and direct personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values, both directly and through subordinate management.
      • Group Manager III must have one plus year of formal line management experience.

      Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

      Job Profile: Group Manager III / Annual Salary Range: $134,100 - $241,400

      Job Profile: Group Manager II / Annual Salary Range: $111,600 - $200,900

      NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
