Develop and conduct Canvas learning events, which could include online presentations, onsite workshops, Canvas courses, or other training scenarios as determined in collaboration with Deans and faculty representatives. Customize training sessions and materials to fit the different needs of departments, user experience levels, and their desired modalities.
Provide one on one support to faculty for making the transition from Sakai, using automated tools to convert courses.
Work with faculty, technologists, and librarians to incorporate instructional design best practices, including but not limited to course design, use of templates, design of course materials, developing assessments, use of educational technology, and utilizing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. Review courses for alignment with established standards of quality.
Process requests for course reviews, transfers of course content, facilitating accommodations within Canvas, and other instructional design requests.
Participate in educational campaigns, for example, visiting department meetings to help areas understand ID services.
Maintain currency in the field related to instructional design, UDL, and accessibility. Includes participation in regional and national associations, workshops, and other professional development activities.
Serve as a nexus to help faculty and others involved in teaching and learning maintain awareness of technological and pedagogical innovations.
Serve on WU task forces and committees as needed.

A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
Any combination of education, training or experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position.
At least 2 years of experience using the Canvas LMS.
At least 2 years of course development experience.
Well versed in best practice in instructional design in higher education, implementation of UDL and accessibility principles in educational technology, and utilizing emerging technologies to support learning.
Teaching or training experience, especially in a higher education environment.
Ability to work with a broad range of educational technologies and to remain current in the field.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
A proven customer service orientation.
A proven ability to make technical issues understandable.
Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
Capability to manage multiple high priority initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to reside in Oregon by the first day of employment or otherwise perform work primarily in Oregon.
Masters degree in instructional design, instructional technology, or related field.
Three (3) years experience or more as an instructional designer in a higher education setting.
Experience leading a conversion to Canvas from another LMS.

Position Summary:
Willamette University seeks an Instructional Designer. The Instructional Designer (ID) will be part of the newly conceived Learning Experience Design Group, and will provide course design and technical support for faculty members using the Canvas Learning Management System and other teaching technologies. The incumbent will initially deploy their skills and the majority of their effort to act as point person in the University’s transition to the Canvas Learning Management System from Sakai. This transition has been ongoing, and is expected to enter its final phase with implementation in the University’s College of Arts and Sciences in the Fall of 2024, with completion in Spring of 2025. As the implementation moves toward completion the ID’s effort will transition toward broader collaboration with faculty to continuously improve and innovate in their use of a broad set of technologies supporting best practices for teaching and learning.
The incumbent works on a variety of duties and responsibilities that have significant impact upon the effectiveness of teaching and learning for the entire University. The position involves a significant level of contact with faculty and staff, as well as with individuals and organizations outside of the University. The incumbent may be required to travel locally and nationally in the performance of the job functions.

Salary: $70,000
