      Internship Description Summary
      Summary of Internship
      National Geographic Society is seeking an Intern to join and support our Education Operations and EduLab teams, as part of the Education division. The Education team amplifies and extends the work of National Geographic Explorers into classrooms, communities and with young people to illuminate and protect the wonder of our world. The Intern will assist in achieving our goals by identifying and analyzing new and relevant research related to geography learning and the Explorer Mindset, as well as various methodologies and innovative data visualizations that will inform the Education division's impact, measurement, and learning efforts. The intern will gain experience in education research in a nonprofit setting and will provide programmatic and logistical support. There is also the opportunity to work and collaborate on special projects related to programs and operations across the organization and the Education division.

      Internship Description

      Four Principal Learning Responsibilities
      • Hone skills by conducting research projects that will support the Education team's understanding of the global education landscape with the latest research and data. This may include researching new and relevant research on geographic learning and the Explorer Mindset, as well as data visualization and best practices. Work across stakeholders to gather information and understand perspectives. (40%)
      • Enhance communication and storytelling skills by producing literature reviews, developing reference materials and recommendations, as well as documenting learning innovations created by the NGS Education Division in a central repository. (30%)
      • Gain exposure to social science and education research, qualitative and quantitative data best practices, learning design, and operations in a nonprofit setting. (15%)
      • Learn about National Geographic Society, the Education division, and the Explorer Mindset by attending various meetings, conducting interviews, and assisting with other duties as needed. (15%)


      Related Field of Study Required
      • Current undergraduate or graduate student working towards a degree in Social Sciences, Data Science, Psychology, or other related discipline. Students will need to be enrolled in school during the internship.
      • Previous internship experience preferred but not required


      Knowledge and Skills Required
      • Effective written, research, and oral communication skills
      • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
      • Ability to work well with others and independently
      • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google applications
      • Ability to conduct literature reviews on newest innovative research methodologies
      • Interest in data visualization techniques for both qualitative and quantitative data
      • Interest in education research, STEM Education, Environmental Education, and/or Geographic Education in a nonprofit setting
      • Passion in illuminating and protecting the wonders of our world and a strong dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education

      Internship Dates
      • Start Date: 6/2/25 (no exceptions)
      • End Date: 8/8/25


      Work Designation

      Our internships are US based. The 2025 program will be mostly remote. Students will be invited to our DC headquarters one week in June to attend one of our signature events.

      Salary Information

      The pay rates for this internship are as follows:
      • $18.55 (undergraduate)
      • $22.00 (graduate)
