Position Title: Investigator Air Safety

Position Summary

The Air Safety Investigator (ASI) conducts investigations of safety-related events (i.e. accidents, incidents, and operational occurrences) that occur during airline operations using data-driven systems, based largely upon scientific principles and operational knowledge. The Air Safety Investigator is a member of the JetBlue Emergency Response “Go Team”, deploying to potentially hazardous accident or incident sites, and is the Investigator-in-Charge (IIC) of any internal safety investigation, as well as the primary liaison with any official government investigation. The Air Safety Investigator is able to work flexible hours, and maintains a rotating on-call status outside of normal business hours, with the ability to respond on short notice, in order to ensure that operational events are properly screened, and investigations are initiated as necessary. The Air Safety Investigator also conducts safety data analysis, manages data sources, and develops new data analysis methods.

Essential Responsibilities

• Conduct detailed investigations of accidents, incidents, significant events, and other safety issues such as those derived through trend analysis.
• Collect flight data and other information in support of event investigation procedures
• Prepare investigation reports that include the facts, analysis, conclusions, and recommendations associated with an event
• Assist in the maintenance of accident investigation Go-Team emergency response procedures and training
• Collect safety event data and analyze flight safety data. Raise general awareness and facilitate the application of corrective action to mitigate risks within the operation and create communication and publications
• Notifies the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and key management personnel of significant events
• Provide reports on flight safety trends identified by data collection efforts.
• Assist in the coordination of corrective actions with operating departments and facilitate Operational Risk Management techniques within the organization to mitigate identified risks
• Conduct safety audits of line operations
• Participate in airline industry safety conferences, groups, and associations to include domestic and international travel
• Ensure adherence to all Safety and Security regulations
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Experience and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in aviation, safety, engineering, psychology or a related field; OR demonstrated capability to perform job responsibilities with a High School Diploma/GED and at least four (4) years of previous relevant experience
• Three (3) years working experience in aviation safety, accident investigations or graduate coursework relevant to the related field or FAA certificated Pilot, A&P or Dispatcher
• Working knowledge of all areas of airline maintenance, flight operations, dispatch, cabin operations, ground operations and commercial aviation regulations
• Working knowledge of regulations governing commercial aviation
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to acquire, analyze, and present information gained through on-site investigation, independent reading, interviews with witnesses, discussions with subject-matter specialists, or others through appropriate methods
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills
• Strong project management skills
• Exceptional interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate with various levels of management, external business partners, and regulatory agencies
• Available for occasional overnight travel (10%)
• Must be in possession of valid travel documents with the ability to travel in and out of the United States
• Working knowledge of regulations and standards governing commercial aviation (ICAO, FAA, NTSB, IOSA)
• Working knowledge of Safety Management System (SMS) principals and application
• Must pass a pre-employment drug test
• Must be legally eligible to work in the country in which the position is located
• Authorization to work in the US is required, this position is not eligible for visa sponsorship

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

• Graduate level coursework in aviation, aviation safety, engineering, safety, or related field
• Prior experience in a 14 CFR Part 121 Safety Investigations program or in one or more of the FAA’s Voluntary Flight Safety Programs such as FOQA, ASAP, FRMS, etc.
• Formal safety management system and accident investigation training
• Ability to work effectively with professionals from diverse technical areas
• Ability to conduct or support data and/or statistical analyses to provide meaningful and actionable insight that improve JetBlue’s safety performance.
• Strong team building interpersonal skills.

• Strong organizational and management skills.
• Ability to work under stress in a fast-paced deadline driven environment.
• Experience in Aviation operations (FAA Certificated Pilot, A&P, Dispatcher or work experience in an operational role at a Part 121 Carrier or Aircraft OEM)
• Airbus 320 (A320), Airbus 220 (A220) and/or Embraer 190 (E190) systems and general flight operations knowledge or experience

• Must be available to respond on short-notice and during flexible hours
• When working or traveling on JetBlue flights, and if time permits, all capable crewmembers are asked to assist with light cleaning of the aircraft

• Must fulfill safety accountabilities as prescribed by JetBlue’s Safety Management System

• Identify safety concerns, issues, incidents or hazards that should be reported and report them whenever possible and by any means necessary including JetBlue’s confidential reporting systems (Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) or Safety Action Report (SAR))
• Responsible for adhering to all applicable laws, regulations (FAA, OSHA, DOT, etc.) and Company policies, procedures and risk controls
• Uphold JetBlue’s safety performance metric goals and understand how they relate to their duties and responsibilities.

• Computer and other office equipment
• Biohazard suit during accident investigations

Work Environment:

• Onsite accident investigations may require strenuous physical activity in hazardous and rugged environments
• Ability to work flexible hours and maintain a rotating “on-call” status during off duty hours for screening safety related events and initiating investigations
• Normal Office/Airport environment
• Occasional need to work on and around aircraft and airport facilities
• Subject to weather and elevated noise levels within airports
• Ability to stand for an extended period of time

Physical effort:

Compensation:

• The base pay range for this position is between $58,500.00 and $89,600.00 per year. Base pay is one component of JetBlue’s total compensation package, which may also include access to healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan and company match, crewmember stock purchase plan, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, free space available travel on JetBlue, and more.
