      Job Description
      This is the first level of the Jailer series. A Jailer's primary duties are to oversee individuals who have been arrested and awaiting trial. The Gwinnett County Jail is a direct supervision pretrial facility. This class is responsible for being trained within the Jail Operations Division. Incumbents must obtain a state certificate from jailer's school within six months.

      Essential Duties
      • Learning department policies and procedures and how to perform general law enforcement duties to include: responding to calls within the jail, conducting searches for contraband, ensuring the proper handling of evidence, testifying in court, and serving court orders, and special conditions within the Jail Operations Division
      • Assisting in processing paperwork for the admittance or release of inmates or detainees; searching individuals and inventorying, confiscating, or distributing property, and maintaining an accurate headcount of the facility
      • Assisting in ensuring the security and safety of the inmates by making sure they are not injured by themselves or by other inmates; performing routine cell and inmate searches to remove contraband materials and weapons; and completing applicable forms and documents, and enforcing write-ups
      • Assisting other agencies in transferring inmates to other facilities and ensuring proper documentation and recording is complete
      • Issuing clothing; performing inmate meal distribution and commissary distribution; overseeing recreation activities and overseeing operation of cafeteria and laundry services
      • Providing orientation information to inmates including visitation sign-ups, medical, mental health information, GRIP information, court dates, and bail and bond information
      • Escorting inmates or detainees throughout the facility for special programs, medical appointments, mental health appointments and court appearances
      • Maintaining daily logs of shift activities, preparing various reports
      Other Job Requirements/Information
      • This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing.
      • This job requires a public safety background check to include motor vehicle histories, criminal histories, and fingerprinting.
      • This job may require 24 hour on-call assignment, overtime or working weekends, holidays, 10 hour, 12 hour, and rotating shifts
      Grade
      The grade for this position is JO213. Salary of $50,725.00

      ** $5,000 hiring incentive for new hires **
      • $50,725.00 with possible incentives up to
      • $52,246.75 (includes 3% pay incentive for an Associate degree)
      • $53,768.50 (includes 6% pay incentive for a Bachelor's degree)

      Gwinnett County Jailers are eligible for promotion to:
      • Jailer Senior $50,990.00 (after successful completion of job requirements)
      • Jailer Master $54,049.00 (after successful completion of job requirements)
      Effective 4/11/2023, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.

      Minimum Qualifications
      • High school diploma, or GED, or anticipate completing within the next three months
      • Valid driver's license
      • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application
      • Must be a United States Citizen
      • Must be able to work any shift, weekends, and holidays
      • Must obtain and maintain a Basic Jail Officer Certification within six months from date of hire
      • Must successfully complete field training through the County
