      As the Lead Energy Systems Specialist, you will be part of the team responsible for the development of engineering solutions that will enable the dynamic control of our distribution system assets which will facilitate the optimised use of existing assets to connect new generation, load and Battery Energy Storage System customers. You'll participate in the strategic development and design of technology driven ANM solutions.

      What you'll be doing?

      You'll participate and direct cross-discipline transfer of expertise and knowledge with fellow Specialists and Engineers, interacting with other engineering experts/departments and holistic technical decisions.

      Perform department calculations, models, reports and regulatory submissions with thorough attention to detail
      Provide engineering oversight for complex ANM solutions, for example the integration of solutions into the everyday working fabric of the business.

      Represent SPEN’s engineering position and interests at industry, regulatory and governmental policy level, aid in securing favourable operating conditions and improving network reliability, security, resilience and asset optimisation.


      Develop new models, techniques and approaches to manage emerging Distribution System Operator (DSO) design challenges including roll-out of ANM CMZs, Flexible Connections, Flexibility, Real Time and Active Fault Level Management (RTFLM and AFLM) and increased network monitoring

      The Lead Energy Systems Specialist, CMZ Developments will be responsible for:

      Contributing to ANM strategy and policy development.


      Integration of the numerous demand side managements initiatives and technologies, for example ANM, AFLM, SPT Load Management Schemes (LMS), SPT and NGESO Generator Export Management System (GEMS) and the NGESO Distributed Restart initiative into a manageable centrally coordinated and controlled solution.


      Identification and evaluation of technology based solutions to further improve the day to day management and optimised performance of our distribution networks
      Directing the priority of CMZ deployment to maximise the opportunity to offer timely curtailable connection opportunities.


      Academic and practical leadership, and talent development by coaching project, senior and lead engineers and embedding a culture of continuous professional development.

      What you'll bring?


      You'll bring extensive Knowledge, expertise and experience of GB Power System, protection, control, and SCADA systems, supported by professional accreditation (for example – membership of recognised professional body).
      Broad distribution system knowledge, facilitating support for key network design, planning, system integration and optimised use of the distribution network
      An understanding of the DSO role, including the network, data and market changes required to enable wide-scale Flexibility, smart network operation and transparent decision making.


      Strong track record of delivery of complex power system solutions across all distribution voltages, including for meshed networks, from customer cut-out to transmission system interface.
      Experience of major UK design codes and standards, government policy and regulation.
      Effective engineering leadership, coaching, development, and support skills.
      Excellent technical communication through written, schematic, oral and analytic forms
      Excellent presentation skills, including the ability to apply persuasive influence to drive decisions through engineering analysis and mathematical arguments.
      Ability to prioritise and manage a diverse and demanding workload.

      Minimum Requirements:

      You will possess good inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships with other departments/businesses, as well as:
      Qualified to Degree level in Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering
      Highly experienced in the design, delivery and ongoing technical support of multi engineering discipline complex projects
      Preferably a Registered with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer, or actively working towards this
