      The opportunity

      The Lead Enterprise Architect is a senior member of the Global Enterprise Architecture group in Manulife. The Global Enterprise Architecture group works collaboratively with segment-level architects to drive the evolution of the Architecture practice in Manulife, to enable cross-segment architecture alignment, and to facilitate the development and use of a common Enterprise Architecture knowledge base across the firm.

      As a key member of the group, the Lead Enterprise Architect will lead cross-segment architecture initiatives, champion the implementation of architecture best practices across the firm and interact with senior business and IT leaders to promote the value of architecture.

      In this role, the Lead Enterprise Architect will work closely with segment-level Enterprise Architects, Global Data Office, Enterprise Technology Services and Enterprise Risk and Compliance teams to ensure that enterprise-wide information and technology policies and standards are implemented by the architectures developed across the firm.

      What will you do?

      • Collaborate with Global Enterprise Architecture leadership team to drive Manulife’s Enterprise Architecture practice transformation into an internal consultancy.

      • Drive and facilitate strategic planning and road mapping of Manulife’s application and technology portfolio. Identify and qualify ideas for optimizing the portfolio composition through reuse, adoption of emerging technologies and reduction of architectural complexity.

      • Engage with business leaders to understand business strategy, objectives and key results and execute architectural assessments to identify the optimal transition from strategy to execution, which supports business transformation and modernization across the firm.

      • Develop an integrated view of organization’s business architecture to support capability, value stream or customer journey assessments and to define and govern outcome-based transformation roadmaps.

      • Keep abreast with latest technology developments, industry/market trends, execute competitive research to identify technology innovation opportunities that can optimize or overhaul our business model.

      • Provide architecture artifacts such as Architecture Reference Models, Conceptual Solution Architecture, Architecture Decisions at the different level of abstraction and views for private/hybrid cloud or on-prem solutions.

      • Develop architectural standards, frameworks, and policies for the acquisition and implementation of IT technologies (hardware and software); monitor and measure the adoption and adherence to standards and guidelines.

      • Facilitate the discovery of information and data requirements across the firm, propose optimized information flows and coordinate the mapping of information and data assets to applications. Work closely with the Global Data Office, Information Risk and segment level architects to ensure that information-related policies and standards are consistently applied in the architecture.

      • Lead application portfolio management initiatives, including driving application rationalization, application portfolio roadmaps, program governance, data management, and total cost of ownership

      • Influence product/vendor direction and integrate technology from an architectural perspective within the business environment, and fulfill an IT governance role, identify risks, and provide risk mitigation.

      • Contribute to meeting key project milestones and overall project deliverables on time, within budget, and adhering to relevant standards.

      What are we looking for?

      • Strategic thinking – ability to understand contexts, identify patterns and trends, and analyze impact of different change factors.

      • Experience in business and technology strategic planning and roadmapping, emerging technologies adoption, qualification and governance of technology investment ideas, technology solutioning and application portfolio optimization.

      • Desire and ability to understand diverse business domains and develop architectures that meet the current and anticipated business needs across a broad set of partners.

      • Demonstrated experience and tangible results across several architecture domains (business, application, data, integration, infrastructure, security).

      • Experience with capability, value stream and customer experience assessments, SWOT analysis, definition, and governance of outcome-based transformation roadmaps.

      • Experience with and knowledge of common Architecture patterns (e.g., microservices, SOA, Event sourcing, etc.).

      • Experience with data and application integration patterns (Domain-Driven, APIs, messaging, streaming, sync/async).

      • Experience addressing operational and non-functional concerns (e.g., scalability, performance, maintainability, load distribution, resilience, recovery, security, and privacy).

      • Experience with Cloud Architecture and Azure Services

      • A strong software engineering and/or architecture background is required.

      Key competencies:

      The ideal candidate must have

      • 10+ years of multi-disciplinary (Business, Data, Application and Infrastructure) architecture experience in a large, complex organizations.

      • 5+ years hands-on experience in developing or leading the development of Enterprise or Solution Architectures with large scope, such as Firm-level, Line of Business, or major function, i.e. Finance.

      • Experience in working directly with Business stakeholders to develop business and/or technology roadmaps and solutions.

      • Understanding of continuous architecture and value stream approach to business solutions.

      • Self-starter with the ability to comfortably operate in ambiguity.

      • Strong conceptual thinking – ability to identify patterns, correlation, and connections when analyzing complex environments.

      • Critical thinker who is unafraid to challenge the status quo, and to propose new ideas.

      • Strategic thinking – ability to understand contexts, identify patterns and trends, and analyze impact of different change factors.

      • Very good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate complex concepts and solutions with Technology and Business teams at all levels.

      Nice to have

      • Background/degree in Computer Science and Engineering

      • Background or working experience in the financial industry.

      • Strong technical skills, i.e. technologist

      • Background or working experience in consulting.

      • Formal training/certification in the Enterprise Architecture discipline, such as TOGAF or FEAF certifications

      • Experience with modern architecture patterns - cloud computing, big data, internet of things and artificial intelligence.

      Salary & Benefits

      The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

      Primary Location

      Toronto, Ontario

      Salary range is expected to be between

      $107,730.00 CAD - $200,070.00 CAD
