      DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a Part-Time Library Assistant for our Library. The Town of Clayton employs more than 300full-time staff in areas including police, fire, and electric utilities. The Town of Clayton also offers a range of PT positions including positions in Parks & Rec, Library, and Cultural Arts.

The Part-time Library Assistant Performs responsible clerical and paraprofessional work in the public library system, including circulation, readers’ advisory, and technology assistance.

      Duties include but are not limited to:

      • Checks books, CDs, and video equipment in and out; instructs users how to use online materials; empties book drops; provides readers’ advisory services to patrons; helps patrons locate different types of books; shelves books; assists patrons in the location of materials for research or reference.
      • Assists patrons with book selection, research, and other needs.
      • Assists patrons with the use of technology, including computers, downloading books, and other technological processes; troubleshoots technology equipment, including hardware, software, peripherals, and various other media.
      • Enrolls new patrons, issues cards, takes fines and fees, and updates patron database.
      • Closes out cash register at end of selected shifts; counts and records cash on hand.
      • Enacts library policies and procedures.
      • Assists and instructs patrons in the use of the online catalog, online databases, and eBook and audiobook platforms. Directs patrons to various parts of the library and answers questions about library programs.
      • Locates, updates, and inputs information into computer. Uses Internet for quick reference questions.
      • Answers telephone and provides general library information; transfers calls and takes messages.
      • Monitors patrons for adherence to library policies.
      • May assist in the preparation and presentation of children’s, teen, or adult programs.
      • May be the staff member in charge of preparing and presenting programs for children, teens, and/or adults.
      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
      • Knowledge of the services and operations of the library system.
      • Knowledge of standard library clerical methods and practices.
      • Some knowledge of library circulation policies and procedures.
      • Ability to learn and apply complex automated procedures and to utilize computer equipment, software, and new technologies in performance of day-to-day work.
      • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and manuals, and to apply such instruction to work situations.
      • Ability to learn and apply complex policies and procedures, and make decisions within the framework of the stated policies and procedures.
      • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, vendors, and the public in both oral and written format.
      • Ability to interpret circulation policies and procedures to the public.
      • Ability to utilize business mathematics and business English.
      • Ability to work without close supervision.
      • Ability to use judgment in performing library duties.
      • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and push or pull heavy objects.


      Minimum Requirements


      PHYSICAL SKILLS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and push or pull heavy objects. May use a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to life and/or move excessively heavy objects. Requires frequent standing, walking, reaching and stooping. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.

      EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. One (1) year of experience in customer service duties involving frequent contact with the public or vendors as well as performing clerical duties. Experience in the operation of a personal computer and related software required. Experience in libraries preferred.

      Salary will be based on budget, education, experience, and equity. This position is a Salary Grade SG100, with a Hiring Rate of $15.00 to $17.00 per hour.
