      Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia - principally residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. Our scenic campus is located in Albemarle County, Virginia. We are one of 23 community colleges in Virginia that comprise the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).

      Position Title: Library Specialist, Part-time

      Department: Library

      Employment Type: Part-time/hourly

      Purpose: PVCC is accepting applications for a part-time Library Specialist, Monday through Thursday, 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. This position works only when classes are in session during the fall and spring semesters, no summers. Primary responsibilities include answering reference questions, teaching face-to-face information literacy sessions, working in Canvas to provide embedded librarian services, and assisting at the circulation desk. This position is part time, with no benefits, and does not exceed 29 hours/week.
      Duties and Responsibilities:
      • Under the direction of the reference/instructional librarian, delivers bibliographic instruction or information literacy sessions to groups in the library or online and provides embedded librarian services via Canvas.
      • Teaches information literacy sessions at the library during work hours.
      • Answers reference questions from students, faculty, staff, and community, including but not limited to how to find books and/or articles in the print and/or electronic collections. Answers questions in person, chat, email, or phone.
      • Completes research requests on behalf of incarcerated students.
      • Communicates effectively and respectfully with students and staff from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
      • Assists the reference/instructional librarian with the scheduling of classes and with the collection of statistics for classes or other projects or programs.
      • Maintains the handout collection, ensuring that it is always stocked, and orders new copies from the Copy Center as needed.
      • Assists users with technical issues (copiers/printers, computers, laptops, etc.).
      • Maintains currency with the library's print and electronic resources.
      • Provides support for the circulation desk as needed (such as during circulation assistant's breaks or absences)
      • Covers Saturday shifts as needed in the absence of the reference/instructional librarian. Saturday hours are virtual only.
      • Performs other duties and carries out special projects as assigned by the reference/instructional librarian.

        Candidates will be required to do an in-person teaching demonstration during the interview process.
      Minimum Qualifications:
      • Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) or master's degree in Library and Information Systems (MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution or interested candidates may be in the process of obtaining an MLS or MLIS.
      • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
      • Superior customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
      • Knowledge of and interest in teaching methods and pedagogy.
      • Public speaking skills.
      • Ability to tailor content delivery to audience level and needs.
